Rachel Carson. Silent Spring. Houghton Mifflin Company (Riverside Press), Boston, Massachusetts, 1962.

Price: US$36.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Apparent first edition, copyright page notes: "Eleventh Printing C" directly above "copyright 1962". Green clothbound without a dustjacket. Exterior is clean and square, minor rub wear to cloth and spine. Interior is also clean and tightly bound. Book has frequent, neat underlining/notations to text, which do not detract from use of the book but negate the collectible value. The title page has a half-inch scribble mark from a ballpoint pen at the upper corner margin (apparently this was this launching point for marking up the entire book!). Despite prior textbook use, book is still very clean and presentable, and highly usable for reading/research.

Now in some parts of America spring is strangely silent, for many of the birds are dead, incidental victims of our reckless attempt to control our environment by the use of chemicals that poison not only the insects against which they are directed, but they birds in the air, the fish in the rivers, the earth which supplies our food, and, inevitably (to what degree is still unknown), man himself."
