Description: Portrait front. Uncut in orig. quarter tan morocco, blue cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt; boards & spine sl. marked. Gift inscription in blue ink on leading f.e.p.: 'For Darling Howard, from Jane. For your 31st - a poor present to offer, as I know what you have given me for my 21st! Feb. 2nd/45'. t.e.g. Number 316 of 500 ordinary numbered copies. This volume is the second in a series of three books produced by the Golden Cockerel Press and edited by Walter Sidney Scott; the first book was The Athenians and the third Shelley at Oxford. Walter Sidney Scott married Thomas Jefferson Hogg's great-niece and allegedly found these letters in a drawer. A loosely inserted note identifies 'Howard' from the inscription as Howard Samuel, the son of the 'high street jeweller' H. Samuel and founder of Great Portland Properties. According to ODNB, Samuel married artist Jane Lane in 1944; the two later divorced but remarried in 1959.
