Description: 280 (2) Seiten mit einer Vignette. Guter Zustand. Buchrücken verblasst. Aus dem Besitz der Gräfin Ledebur mit geprägtem Monogramm (Krone) auf dem Vorsatz. - Willa Sibert Cather (December 7, 1873 – April 24, 1947) was an American author who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, in works such as O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and The Song of the Lark. In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. Cather grew up in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She lived and worked in Pittsburgh for ten years, then at the age of 33 she moved to New York, where she lived for the rest of her life. . Writing influences: Cather admired Henry James as a "mighty master of language and keen student of human actions and motives." She generally preferred past literary masters to contemporary writers. Some particular favorites were Dickens, Thackeray, Emerson, Hawthorne, Balzac, Flaubert, and Tolstoy. While Cather enjoyed the novels of George Eliot, the Brontës, and Jane Austen, she regarded most women writers with disdain, judging them overly sentimental and mawkish. Cather's biographer James Woodress notes that Cather "so completely . embraced masculine values that when she wrote about women writers, she sounded like a patronizing man." One contemporary exception was Sarah Orne Jewett, who became Cather's friend and mentor. Jewett advised Cather to use female narrators in her fiction, but Cather preferred to write from a male point of view. Jewett also encouraged Cather to write about subjects that had "teased the mind" for years. Chief among these subjects were the people and experiences Cather remembered from her years in Nebraska. She dedicated O Pioneers!, the first novel in her Prairie Trilogy, to Jewett. . Description: The author follows a little twelve year-old girl, in 1697, who calls the rock of Quebec, home. She doesn't feel the isolation of many of the settlers, but enjoys Governor Frontenac as he entertains children in his palace. As Cather follows this devout and resourceful child over the course of a year, she re-creates the continent as it must have appeared to its first European inhabitants. 280 pages. Willa Sibert Cather (born Wilella Sibert Cather; 1873–1947) was an American writer known for her novels of life on the Great Plains. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours, a novel set during World War I. Cather achieved recognition as a novelist of the frontier and pioneer experience. She wrote of the spirit of those settlers moving into the western states, many of them European immigrants in the nineteenth century. Common themes in her work include nostalgia and exile. A sense of place is an important element in Cather's fiction: physical landscapes and domestic spaces are for Cather dynamic presences against which her characters struggle and find community. Hardcover has light green cloth boards with paper sticker title/autor pasted spine and front. No DJ. Interior is clean and unmarked, but front hinge broken and pasted on front end-paper is the poem "Poor Marty" by Wila Cather (reprinted from "The Atlantic Monthly"?). Copyright 1931. Description: ____".700 copies were bound in wrappers made up of a trial dust jacket for distribution as advance review copies._____ In all review copies examined, the copyright notice is "SECOND EDITION", and this statement is seen in no other printing._____ This was an error, rectified by a stop-press correct, early in the pressrun._____ It may be argued that the advance review copy, therefore, is the true first edition.A piece of minor evidence exists to support the chronological precedence.the back cover of the jacket wrapper has.Knopf's name in print rather than the facsimile signature as it appears on the trade issue jackets._____ Also, the wrapper is printed in black rather than red, as were later jackets -- obviously an earlier trial jacket."--Crane A.17.a.i. (p.157). _____ The paper over the spine is darkened and chipped. _____
