Condition: Very Good

Description: A first edition, first printing, published by Cape in 1935 - first trade edition. A near fine book in very good (or better) supplied dust wrapper. First trade edition, first impression, of Lawrence of Arabia's extraordinary and handsomely produced account of his role in the Arab Revolt, attractively bound. "Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and, in October 1916, was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia Deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs" (ODNB). This trade edition follows the unprocurable Oxford Times edition of 1922, of which there were just 8 copies printed, and the 1926 Cranwell edition, of which only 170 copies were designated complete for subscribers. An abridged edition, Revolt in the Desert, was published in 1927.

Thick, royal 8vo, publisher’s original polished buckram lettered and decorated in gilt, upper cover with crossed swords motif in gilt. 672 pp. A very fresh and handsome copy, as fine, the buckram with only the most minimal spine mellowing to which the binding is prone, the interior is essentially pristine, both plates and text-block in excellent condition with the text-block remaining largely unopened. A VERY PLEASING COPY OF THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST PERSONAL MILITARY BIOGRAPHIES OF THE CENTURY. This is the first edition that was printed for general circulation and a handsome copy of an enduring masterpiece. All earlier printings were private and done with very low limitations on the printing, thus they are now very scarce and very costly. Lawrence, in relating the history of his involvement in the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule during the First World War, produced a true literary classic. In October of 1936, upon the occasion of the dedication of the Lawrence Memorial at Oxford, Winston Churchill said: "it is one of the treasures of English literature.as a narrative of war and adventure.it is unsurpassed. it ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language. If Lawrence had never done anything except write this book as a mere work of the imagination, his fame would last in Macaulay's familiar phrase, "as long as the English language is spoken in any quarter of he globe"." Its fame was further secured by Hollywood: "Lawrence of Arabia," starring Peter O'Toole, was based upon the book. Bernard Shaw described the book as one of the greatest of our time. A personal narrative of the revolt of Arab armies against the Turks during the First World War, SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM stands as a monument of modern literature and history. "Seven Pillars is a tale of war and adventure and a profound epitome of all that the Arabs mean to the world. It will take its place at once as an English classic. The richness and energy of the theme, the quality of the prose, the sense of the mystic, immeasurable personality lying behind it, raise the work at once and decisively above the level of contemporary productions. It ranks with Pilgrim’s Progress, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver’s Travels as a model of lucid, forcible, fascinating narrative. Yet intense as is the interest of the story, we feel that many will study it even more closely for the intimate access which it offers to a wonderful and still largely inscrutable man, indifferent to the ordinary prizes of human life and gifted differently and far beyond the normal standards of mankind. Careless of life or comfort, scornful of wealth or pleasures, having cut out of himself all ambition, all love of power and fame, he nevertheless thirsted for recognition from the generations which he would not see. That he has achieved his purpose cannot be doubted. His book will be read as long as the English language is spoken. Forever it will revive the memories, aye, and the passions, of armageddon; forever it will reveal all that is most characteristic of the Arab race and all that is most vital in war. The story is told with unrelenting candour. Nothing in Edgar Allan Poe exceeds in horror some of its pages. The description of Lawrence’s torment when he fell unknown into the hands of the Turks is a terrifying, a shocking, and at the same time a necessary passage which enables us to realize better than anything else the war injuries which he sustained, and from which he never completely recovered. We have to think of him in the twenty years that followed as a man seared in body and spirit by the sufferings he had undergone for his country’s cause. Still, in the main and for all its shadows, this book is a joyous book, and those who read it will not only be instructed and startled but also enthralled and delighted.Lawrence of Arabia is a name that will live in history and in legend. Price: US$769.66 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Large 4to., brown publisher's cloth, lettered and decorated with crossed sword device in gilt to the upper board; spine lettered in gilt; outer and lower edge untrimmed; in the printed dust jacket (30s. net); pp. [vi], 7-672; black and white frontis showing a sculpture of the author; together with numerous other full-page illustrations by the author, here reproduced in black and white; and four folding maps; a few light spots, perhaps a touch shaky in the binding; backstrip lining showing to foot of spine; a very good copy nonetheless, in the fragile dust jacket which is a little creased, a couple of small nicks to foot; one small closed tear to upper corner of front panel; also very good. First trade edition, in the original dust jacket. Seven Pillars was first printed in 1922, in an edition of just eight copies intended for the author's private use. Of these, only six known copies survive intact. A subscribers copy followed in 1926, privately published in a run of 211 copies, and given to the author's family and friends. This edition of 1935, published posthumously, was the first for public sale. It sold out within a month, with second, third, and even fourth impressions appearing just a few weeks later. His most famous work, Seven Pillars serves as memoir of the famous 'Lawrence of Arabia', including the Arab Revolt against the Turks during WWI, and a historical account of Middle Eastern and Military History. 'It is a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfillment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a grueling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles.' (ODNB)

Lawrence T.E.. SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. London Jonathan Cape 1935, 1935.

Price: US$874.50 + shipping

Description: Lawrence, T.E. SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM (London: Jonathan Cape, 1935) A FINE COPY OF THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST PERSONAL MILITARY BIOGRAPHIES OF THE CENTURY. Lawrence, in relating the history of his involvement in the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule during the First World War, produced a true literary classic. Winston Churchill said of the book, "[It] ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language." Its fame was further secured by Hollywood: "Lawrence of Arabia," starring Peter O'Toole, was based upon the book. This is a splendid, handsome copy of an enduring masterpiece. A personal narrative of the revolt of Arab armies against the Turks during the First World War, SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM stands as a monument of modern literature and history. Bernard Shaw described the book as one of the greatest of our time. All earlier printings were private and done with very low limitations on the printing, thus they are now very scarce. This is the first edition that was printed for general circulation. Seven Pillars is a tale of war and adventure and a profound epitome of all that the Arabs mean to the world. It will never be forgotten." And in October of 1936, upon the occasion of the dedication of the Lawrence Memorial at Oxford, Churchill said: "it is one of the treasures of English literature.as a narrative of war and adventure.it is unsurpassed. it ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language. If Lawrence had never done anything except write this book as a mere work of the imagination, his fame would last in Macaulay's familiar phrase, "as long as the English language is spoken in any quarter of he globe"."

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: With 53 plates and 4 folding maps. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt-stamped cover, slightly worn; text is clean and bright. A very good uncut copy. Included is a 4-page subscription for the publication of the limited edition of Seven pillars of Wisdom (complete and unabridged) indicating that the regular edition, priced at five dollars, will be ready of September 27th, and the De Luxe edition, limited to 750 numbered copies at $25.00, will be ready September 18th. First trade edition. Seven pillars is the memoir of Thomas Edward Lawrence, the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, when he was serving as liaison officer of the British Army with rebel forces during the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks of 1916 to 1918. Famously, Lawrence lost his briefcase containing the original manuscript for the work and had to rewrite most of the book from memory. A thrilling tale of intrigue and war, Lawrence's detailed prose carries one on an epic tale through war-torn desert landscapes introducing the reader to a colorful cast of characters along the way. Perfect for collectors interested in military history and strategy. Lawrence (1888-1935) is one of the most famous figures in English history. A British intelligence and RAF officer, Lawrence was lauded for his service and invited by Winston Churchill "to join the new Middle East department." Despite being born to an illegitimate union, Lawrence grew up in a comfortable and pious home, where he nurtured his scholastic inclinations. While studying history at Jesus College in Oxford he developed an interest in medieval warfare and archaeology. This led him to excavations in Syria for the British Museum and paved the way for his famous diplomatic and military exploits in the Middle East. Lawrence was also an author "deeply concerned with posterity" and actively promoted his war-hero reputation during his lifetime. While some of the more fantastical moments in his stories are known to be exaggerated, they nonetheless make for an exciting read.

All but six of these plates had to be pasted by hand. "The Study of T. E. Lawrence, the man, is only now beginning because his attributes, versatility and contributions to society are at last being fully appreciated. For too long he has been presented in the media as just a dashing soldier of fortune. A closer look at T. E. Lawrence reveals a fascinating man, a polymath; he was an acknowledged authority on the history of the Crusades, military history and archaeology, and an expert in guerilla warfare who was well-versed in intelligence operations. He wrote poetry and essays; he translated from Greek and French; and for a time he reviewed books regularly for a weekly journal. He had a great love of books and fine printing and at one time hoped to have his own press. He could consort happily with people in all walks of life and was much respected by those who knew him" (foreword by Edwards H. Metcalf to O’Brien’s bibliography). O'Brien A041 #1291.

"Seven Pillars, for all its unevenness of interest and quality, and its frequent straining for effect, is a great and memorable work [Churchill ranked it with 'the greatest books ever written in the English language.'] . . . Novelistic in many ways, in its creation of character most obviously, and in its imaginative qualities, [it] often tread[s] a fine line between purple prose and hauntingly luminous description, between accounts of monotonous camel rides or Bedouin encampments and passages of great spirituality and insight . . . Subsequent researches have shown it to be likely that Lawrence embellished the story in places to give his own part and prowess greater prominence. But . . . there is no doubt that his achievements as a military commander were remarkable . . . " (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. Lawrence, T. E. Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph.. Jonathan Cape, London, 1935.

Price: US$3000.00 + shipping

Description: First trade edition of Lawrence’s classic account of his role in the Arab rebellion against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Quarto, bound in full morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with photographic plates, portraits from sketches and four folding maps. In fine condition. An exceptional example. Praised by Winston Churchill as one of the “the greatest books ever written in the English language”, Lawrence's Seven Pillars is not only a remarkably accurate historical account of the Arab Rebellion, but an epic heroic adventure and chronicle of a profound spiritual awakening (Wilson, 55). Lawrence kept extensive notes throughout the course of his involvement in the Revolt and began work on a narrative in the first half of 1919 while in Paris for the Peace Conference. By December 1919, he had an extensive draft which was tragically lost when he misplaced his briefcase while changing trains at Reading railway station. In early 1920, Lawrence set about the daunting task of rewriting as much as he could remember of the first version, working from memory alone as he had destroyed many of his wartime notes upon completion of the initial manuscript. The Subscribers' Edition of The Seven Pillars of Wisdom was finally published in late 1926, with the subtitle A Triumph. Lawrence was killed in a motorcycle accident in May 1935, at the age of 46, and within weeks of his death, the 1926 abridgement was published for general circulation. The book was adapted into the film Lawrence of Arabia directed by David Lean, produced by Sam Spiegel and starring Peter O'Toole. It is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema.

LAWRENCE, THOMAS EDWARD:. Seven Pillars of Wisdom, A Triumph. London, Jonathan Cape, 1935.. 1935, 1935.

Price: US$3516.68 + shipping

Description: Large 4to. Pp. 672. With four folding maps, 51 full page plates, of which 4 coloured and 3 facsimile manuscripts. Publisher's quarter morocco on buckram covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignette on upper cover, marbled endpapers. Upper edges gilt, others uncut. A few small scratches on upper cover, some spots to outer edges. Original dust jacket, with tears and spine partly gone. Housed in a specially made cloth box. First published edition, limited to 750 copies, of which this is no. 68. The famous autobiographical account by T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") of his legendary part in the Arab rebellion against the Ottoman Turks between the years 1916-18. Lawrence did not believe the text would be of interest to the public in general and at first only allowed limited publications for friends (in 1922) and subscribers (in 1926). Lawrence was very involved in the production of the Seven Pillars. To finance the project he authorised Jonathan Cape to publish a heavily abridged and simplified version called "Revolt in the Desert" in 1927. The Seven Pillars is lavishly illustrated with photographic plates and portraits from sketches, and folding maps. The illustrators were the best British artists of the day: Wadsworth, Nash, Roberts, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Dobson, William Nicholson and others. Also included a copy of the Times from May 1935 with two pages of editorial about Lawrence, and testimonials from friends and colleagues including David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. A handsome copy of this noted work, called by Churchill "one of the greatest books ever written in the English language". O'Brien A041.

Cox in loving memory of the author [.] S Lawrence Jan. 1. 1936', by Lawrence's mother, Sarah (1861-1959) to the clergyman and schoolmaster E. W. Cox, who was a friend and neighbour of the Lawrence family, and who taught Lawrence and his three eldest brothers at Oxford High School. W. Bain & Co., Ltd, upper board blocked in gilt with text and crossed sword design, spine lettered gilt, top edges brown, others uncut, original beige dust wrapper lettered in black, not price-clipped; spine and wrappers slightly marked, extremities slightly rubbed and creased, short tears and chips at edges, otherwise a very good copy of the uncommon dust wrapper. Custom-built slipcase. Seven Pillars of Wisdom was first printed in 1922 in an edition of eight copies for Lawrence's use, of which only six survive. It was followed by the 'Subscriber's' or 'Cranwell' edition in 1926, published privately in an edition of c. 211 copies and, as Lawrence wrote to the bookseller Henry Sotheran Ltd on 24 April 1925, 'this thing is being given only to my friends and their friends. No copies are for sale.' Finally, after Lawrence's death in May 1935, it was published in a trade edition by Jonathan Cape in July 1935. Such was the book's popularity that the first impression of 60,000 copies was quickly exhausted and second, third and fourth impressions were printed in August 1935, and then this fifth impression in September 1935. Due to high demand, the fifth and sixth impressions were printed at the Alden Press, Oxford and the University Press, Cambridge (as here). The recipient of this copy contributed a memoir of T. E. Lawrence as a schoolboy to T.E. Lawrence by his Friends, and a memoir of Lawrence's brother Frank to The Home Letters of T.E. Lawrence and his Brothers, and remained in contact with Sarah Lawrence until her death in 1959. O'Brien A042

Lawrence. T, E. Seven Pillars of Wisdom in Geometric Arabic Fine Binding. Jonathan Cape, 1935.

Price: US$3591.73 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First Edition copy of Seven Pillars of Wisdom by TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), 1935 First trade edition, first impression, of Lawrence of Arabia's extraordinary and handsomely produced account of his role in the Arab Revolt, attractively bound in a Geometric Arabic patterned fine binding using gold 24 carat tooling. The book is bound in Morocco, goat skin, and five raised bands to spine. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs". This trade edition follows the unprocurable Oxford Times edition of 1922, of which there were just 8 copies printed, and the 1926 Cranwell edition, of which only 170 copies were designated complete for subscribers. An abridged edition, Revolt in the Desert, was published in 1927. Please get in contact with any questions at all and I would be delighted to answer them for you. Price £2,800 ONO.
