T. E. Lawrence. Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph. Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1936.

Price: US$40.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph by T. E. Lawrence was published by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York, in 1936. Not an ex-library copy, this 672-page, 6 3/4" X 9", 78-year-old, some might say, iconic offering is in G+ condition. There is some staining of end papers front and back from original glue, and modest light browning of text's pages, although this is mitigated to a large degree due to the book's being printed, if I'm not mistaken, on light brownish stock to begin with. The original/a previous owner's name is printed in the upper right corner of the front loose end page. At age 78, this volume is still in rather nice shape, physically speaking. From an introductory note by the author, dated August 15, 1926, "Mr. Geoffrey Dawson persuaded All Souls College to give me leisure, in 1919-1920, to write about the Arab Revolt. Sir Herbert Baker let me live and work in his Westminster houses. The book so written passed in 1921 into proof, where it was fortunate in the friends who criticized it. Particularly it owes its thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Shaw for countless suggestions of great value and diversity. . It does not pretend to be impartial. I was fighting for my hand, upon my own midden. Please take it as a personal narrative pieced out of memory. I could not make proper notes: indeed it would have been a breach of my duty to the Arabs if I had picked such flowers while they fought." By the way, Reader, this highly acclaimed work has its somewhat unlikely/out-of-place title due to Lawrence's intention of using it for a previously planned book that never got written--Lawrence liked the title, though, and was bound and determined to use it. Also included are Synopses for the Introduction, and for each of the ten Books which follow; a [List of] Illustrations(of which there are some 53 full page, black and white, beautifully rendered pictures, the bulk of them done by Kennington, the remainder by such as Sargent, Roberts, John, and Rothenstein, among others); [List of Maps (there are three, all drawn by one E. O. McIntosh); the Epilogue("Why the Taking of Damascus Ended My Efforts in Syria"); Appendix I("Nominal Rolls of Armored Cars and Talbot Battery"); Appendix II("A Diary of Place-Names and Dates"); Index: Place-Names; and, finally, Index: Personal Names. Truly, from Book I, "My First Visit to Arabia" to Book X, "The Liberation of Damascus", this very early edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a classic literary work that will live on as long as the name Lawrence of Arabia resonates in the annals of world history. Thank you very much!!

Description: 672 pages. Illustrations. Maps (all four listed are present in the text). Appendices. Index. Footnotes on page seven stated that An index has been added to this edition. DJ is in a plastic sleeve and has some wear, soiling, small tears and creases. First American Edition of the classic autobiography by Lawrence of Arabia. Basis for the famed, multi-award-winning David Lean film of 1962. Thomas Edward Lawrence CB DSO (16 August 1888 - 19 May 1935) was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer who became renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-1918) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-1918) against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia. Soon after the outbreak of war in 1914 he volunteered for the British Army and was stationed at the Arab Bureau intelligence unit in Egypt. In 1916, he traveled to Mesopotamia and to Arabia on intelligence missions and became involved with the Arab Revolt as a liaison to the Arab forces, along with other British officers, supporting the Arab Kingdom of Hejaz's independence war against the Ottoman Empire. He worked closely with Emir Faisal, a leader of the revolt, and he participated, sometimes as leader, in military actions against the Ottoman armed forces, culminating in the capture of Damascus in October 1918. After the First World War, Lawrence joined the British Foreign Office, working with the government and with Faisal. In 1922, he retreated from public life Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the autobiographical account of the experiences of British Army Colonel T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") while serving as a military advisor to Bedouin forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire of 1916 to 1918. It was completed in February 1922, but first published in December 1926. The title comes from the Book of Proverbs; "Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars" (Proverbs 9:1) (King James Version). Before the First World War, Lawrence had begun work on a scholarly book about seven great cities of the Middle East, to be called Seven Pillars of Wisdom. It was incomplete when war broke out and Lawrence stated that he destroyed the manuscript. He used his original title for the later work. The book had to be rewritten three times, once following the loss of the manuscript on a train at Reading railway station. From Seven Pillars, ". and then lost all but the Introduction and drafts of Books 9 and 10 at Reading Station, while changing trains. This was about Christmas, 1919." (p. 21). Seven Pillars of Wisdom is an autobiographical account of his experiences during the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918, when Lawrence was based in Wadi Rum in Jordan as a member of the British Forces. With the support of Emir Faisal and his tribesmen, he helped organize and carry out attacks on the Ottoman forces from Aqaba in the south to Damascus in the north. After the 1926 release of the Subscribers' Edition, Lawrence stated that no further issue of Seven Pillars would be made during his lifetime. Lawrence was killed in a motorcycle accident in May 1935, at age 46; within weeks of his death, the 1926 abridgement, as well as the first unabridged US edition by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., were released to the general public. An advertisement for the 1935 edition quotes Churchill as saying "It ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language. As a narrative of war and adventure it is unsurpassable."
