Description: iv,[2],49,[2],46,16,32,16,33-48,17- 32,16,24,16,16,8,8,8,16pp. plus folding plate of the Kinderhook Plates and frontispiece portrait. Bound in reverse order from the Contents page. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, neatly rebacked, original gilt morocco label preserved. Very good. Lacking three parts (48pp. total) in the Second Series. The omnibus issue of Pratt's tracts and debates, containing the variant (i.e. later) printing of the general title-leaf, with Richards listed as the publisher. An even later form of this title-leaf exists, with the imprint dated 1852. Flake distinguishes between the variant title imprints, but does not assign priority. Crawley and Whittaker assert categorically that the "R. James" imprint is primary. As President of the British Mission, Pratt wrote and published voluminously, and in this omnibus format, his pamphlets formed an extremely influential book, being among the chief means whereby the burgeoning numbers of British converts learned the tenets of their new religion. Copies were issued with one or more frontispiece portraits of Pratt, Taylor, and other elders of the Mormon church; this copy contains the portrait of John Taylor, as well as the separate titlepages for Gibson and Taylor's DISCUSSIONS which are often lacking. All of these texts were frequently reprinted, both collectively and individually, with one exception. In 1865, Brigham Young condemned one of the constituent tracts, GREAT FIRST CAUSE, as offensive and ordered the faithful to extract it from their copies. That pamphlet is here intact, though this copy lacks the last three numbers of the second series, subtitled "Evidences of the Book of Mormon and Bible Compared," "The Book of Mormon Confirmed by Miracles," and "Prophetic Evidence in Favour of the Book of Mormon.". FLAKE 6542. GRAFF 3346. CRAWLEY 552. CRAWLEY & WHITTAKER 32 (ref). SABIN 64962 (ref). MORMON FIFTY 35 (ref).

Condition: Very Good

Description: Finely re-bound: quarter leather boards with hand marbled paper and leather end caps. Gilt lettering on the spine. Tremendous craftsmanship. Two previous owner's signatures to the second free end paper with interior foxing affecting the first few pages, though the interior of the text block is clean. Select pages mended within the text block. Minor tears on the top and bottom of the rear fold-out which has also been mended with tape. The last two gatherings are a bit loose, but overall the binding is holding up well. The modern binding is fine, and the text block, with the repairs, is very good.
