Description: First English edition. Two volumes. Translated by D.F. Hannigan. Illustrated with black and white plates after S. Gorski. Blue cloth elaborately illustrated in gilt. Very slight wear on the cloth, endpapers slightly toned, a near fine copy. Flaubert's autobiographical novel of his youthful infatuation with an older, married woman. It is also noted for its vivid panorama of France during the 1848 Revolution and under the July Monarchy.
