Description: Publisher's gilt-decorated black cloth. Tall quarto. 217pp. Illustrated with 10 full-page black & white plates by Harry Clarke. With front and back panel and flaps of jacket laid in. A good copy with some wear to the spine tips. There is some white flecking to the right side of the rear cover and to the gilt-lettering at the top of the spine. There is a bookplate on one of the front blanks else the text is very good with some scattered light soiling. The plates all have their tissue guards and are quite clean. The front and rear jacket panels are good with some edge-chipping.

Algernon Swinburne's poems were largely known for their sexually explicit material, shocking to certain readers of the Victorian Age. He wrote prolifically, producing many essays of literary criticism, and several collections of shorter fiction and poems. Swinburne's use of language is adept, and creates ethereal but gloomy imagery. This edition contains illustrations which capture the nature of the poems perfectly. The top textblock is somewhat dust-soiled, bookplate on the front pastedown.
