LOVECRAFT, H. P.. Selected Letters.. Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1965-76, 1965.

Price: US$1030.61 + shipping

Description: First editions, first printings, of the complete series of Lovecraft's letters. "It is remarkable that Derleth and Wandrei, when founding Arkham House [in] 1939, were even then thinking of publishing Lovecraft's letters, clearly his most important (and in many ways his greatest) work. That dream, however, was not fulfilled" until the publication of this set was complete (Joshi, p. xvi). Arkham House, named after Lovecraft's fictional New England city, was founded two years after his death in 1937 to produce hardback editions of his fiction, which had first appeared in pulp magazines. The publishers have since become specialists in the "weird fiction" subgenre. Joshi, Lovecraft 41.a.1, 45.a.1, 59, 68-69. 5 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, grey endpapers. With dust jackets. With 4 half-tone photographic frontispieces. Very slight occasional bumping to spine ends, the bindings otherwise sharp, internally crisp. A fine set in near-fine jackets, occasional light rubbing and bumping, unclipped, bright.

Lovecraft, H. P.. Selected Letters I-V Complete Five-Volume Collection. Arkham House, Sauk City, Wis, 1965.

Price: US$1890.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A high-grade collectable five-volume, first edition, first printing, complete set of Arkham House's Collected Letters of H. P. Lovecraft. Each octavo volume is in its original Holliston Black Novelex binding cloth with gilt stamped titles to the spine. Additionally, each volume has their original unclipped Ronald Gore designed jackets. All first-printing points verified as published in Jefferey's Arkham House Companion. In the 30-years I have been dealing in Arkham House and Lovecraft books, this is the finest set I have had the privilege of possessing. The most critical point of what I consider a fine set, after only the first printing points, is the condition of the dust jacket for volume I. The jacket was printed using a blue ink notorious for its ability to quickly fade into the abyss of a sunlit shelf. Copies of this volume often appear a faint gray-blue or even a faint gray shadow. The Jacket for Volume I of this set, and the jackets for its companion volumes, have been protected since publication by custom thick paper dust jacket jackets with typed titles. Each volume's binding is sharp and tight. Internal pages are crisp with only faint natural yellowing. Volume V remains in its original shrink wrap. Hard Cover in Holliston Black Novelex Cloth with gilt titles
