Description: pp. (viii), 9-80, (i) imprint with gilt cockerel device, (iii) blank. Text wood engravings by JOHN FARLEIGH. Vellum-backed boards, uncut, a very good copy. *The intended publication was to have been 2 volumes, each limited to 450 copies. A printed slip at the front of the book explains : '. owing to an accident in the recent Thunder-storms, more than half the sheets of Swift's Essays, Volume I., were destroyed. The type having been already distributed, these will not be reprinted. The edition, in spite of some of the sheets having a higher number, will therefore consist of less than 200 copies .' CHANTICLEER #27 - 190 copies survived.

Description: 4to (ca 10.5x8in), hardback, prelims + 80pp + endpapers. Cream spine with green marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine. Good+ condition. General light wear, spine sunned, bumped, some offsetting and discolouration to endpapers, page edges foxed and age-toned, upper front corner bruised and lightly split. Uncut, thick cream paper, two columns per page throughout. A lovely volume. Pictures available on request. Note : only one volume was ever issued. Of this first volume, over half were destroyed, and the surviving copies were issued to subscribers in order of priority.
