A printed slip at the front of the book explains : '. owing to an accident in the recent Thunder-storms, more than half the sheets of Swift's Essays, Volume I., were destroyed. The type having been already distributed, these will not be reprinted. The edition, in spite of some of the sheets having a higher number, will therefore consist of less than 200 copies .' CHANTICLEER #27 - 190 copies survived.

Of this first volume, over half were destroyed, and the surviving copies were issued to subscribers in order of priority.
