LAWRENCE, T. E.. Secret Despatches From Arabia. Published by Permission of the Foreign Office. The Golden Cockerel Press [1939], London, 1939.

Price: US$400.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies of which this is no. 459. "With the exception of the article 'Syrian cross-currents' which has not hitherto been printed, the contents of this volume were included in the confidential paper called 'The Arab bulletin' which was issued at Cairo from 6th June, 1916, to 6th December, 1918"--Foreword. 173 p. 26 cm. Frontispiece portrait. Quarter black leather with cream cloth. Binder's signature S&S (Sangorski & Sutcliffe) at bottom of front pastedown. Cloth darkened. Small white mark on spine tail. Occasional foxing. A compilation of T. E. Lawrence's wartime reports collected under an eye-catching title, "Secret Despatches." The documents are Crown Copyright and were therefore censored under the then pertaining fifty-year rule, so special dispensation to print was obtained from the Foreign Office. Topics include military notes, nationalism among the desert tribesmen, and commentary on Arab families and armies. Perhaps despatch XXVII, entitled Twenty-Seven Articles (p. 126-133) will be of the most interest to modern readers, for it provides 27 hints or "commandments" for those wishing to get along with the Sherifs in wartime, such as "Go easy just for the first few weeks," "Your ideal position is when you are present and not noticed," "Cling tight to your sense of humour," and "Never lay hands on an Arab; you degrade yourself." Glossary at rear. Foreword by A. W. Lawrence, the author's brother.

LAWRENCE, T.E.. Secret Despatches Published by permission of the Foreign Office. Golden Cockerel Press, London, 1939.

Price: US$722.22 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: From the Prospectus for "Secret Despatches": "Early in June 1916, when employed by the Arab Bureau, T.E. Lawrence suggested starting confidential summaries of information and reports to supplement the Intelligence Bulletin issued by G.C.H.Q. at Ismailia. The first six summaries were typewritten and reproduced by duplicator; the subsequent issues were printed, and appeared irregularly twice a month, from June, 1916, to December, 1918, under the title of The Arab Bulletin. The information they contained was considered so confidential that only twenty-six copies were sent out, to high officials and officers. The Arab Bulletin was first edited by Lawrence on behalf of the Director of the Arab Bureau. When Lawrence went to Arabia to organize the Arab Revolt he sent in periodical despatches, and reports of his journeys, which were published in The Arab Bulletin. By special permission of the Foreign Office, and by arrangement with Mr A.W. Lawrence, these extremely important documents are now printed in book form for the first time. Although they were composed on the scene of action they are written in Lawrence's vivid and lively style, and give a composite picture of the activities during the Arab War. They have thus a peculiar historical value and are also of great literary interest, since Lawrence undoubtedly drew upon them for reference when he came to write The Seven Pillars Of Wisdom." Number 51 of 1,000 copies, bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in quarter niger over white cloth. Top edges gilt. Measures 10 x 7.5 inches. Printed by Christopher Sandford and Owen Rutter in 14 point Perpetua type on Arnold's mould-made paper with a hitherto unpublished photograph of Lawrence in Arab dress presented as the frontispiece. Near fine with sporadic light spotting to page edges. A lovely book The Prospectus is laid in

LAWRENCE, T.E. (LAWRENCE, A.W. - Editor). Oriental Assembly - Uncorrected Proofs (True First English Edition); together with First English Trade Edition. Williams and Norgate Ltd, London, 1939.

Price: US$1754.39 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The very scarce Uncorrected Proofs, described by O'Brien as the First English Edition (A220). Octavo. Twenty-one gatherings of folded sheets, comprising 292 pages of text and illustrations/plates, including several blank pages for lists of illustrations to be added later; loose in a contemporary cloth-covered portfolio. With contents and collation as stated in O'Brien. Some edges rough-trimmed. The XIX diary plates and 111 war photographs present as called for, as well as a portrait of Lawrence by R. G. Goslett, standing in the desert in full arab dress, tents behind, intended as the frontispiece and titled as such but not used in the published edition which featured instead an image of Lawrence's camels. Minor wear and spotting to edges of some textual leaves but near fine overall. 'Oriental Assembly' contains hitherto unpublished writings by Lawrence about the Middle East, including a diary kept on his journey through Northern Syria in 1911 collecting antiquities for the Ashmolean Museum, and the suppressed introductory chapter to 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. With the ownership initials on the first leaf of Walter John Armytage (1913-1980), and his pencil amendment to the contents page inserting the definite article before 'War Photographs', a correction observed in the published book suggesting possible involvement with the publishers. A scion of one of Ireland's noble families (their seat was Halston House in Moyvore, County Westmeath), Armytage was a passionate book collector with an extensive library. FOR SALE TOGETHER WITH the First English Trade Edition of 'Oriental Assembly' (O'Brien A221), William & Norgate, 1939. First Impression. Octavo. Original brown, buckram-covered boards titled in gilt to spine, top edge stained black. Covers slightly bowed, foxing to fore-edge and sporadically to contents, small mark on the spine, otherwise a lovely bright copy. The dust jacket has a few minor spots and abrasions but is overall a superb example. With a photographic frontispiece of camels, among more than a hundred photographs taken by Lawrence as mentioned. Same provenance as the Uncorrected Proofs, with an interesting pencil note on the front blank by Armytage, preceded by his initials and the year 1939 : "These photogtaphs were all identified by me at the Imperial War Museum & the proofs compared with the originals and the negatives. I searched for Seal-Hunting in Mesopotamia (see p.3) through long runs of various periodicals in the British Museum without success", and signed Walter Armytage. Loosely inserted is a copy of the publisher's prospectus for Lawrence's 'Secret Despatches from Arabia' (Golden Cockerel Press, 1939): single leaf folded, white laid paper, lower edge deckled. Fine condition. Also very scarce (O'Brien A227).
