Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: All volumes have the publication date on the title page (removed on later printings). All volumes are generally very good, but each has some problems. The Grand Alliance (Good+) has a bumped top front corner and the first 25 of so leaves are creased and bumped on the top corners. Its jacket has additional wear on the flaps. Closing the Ring also has stains at the base of the rear endpaper and Triumph and Tragedy has an ink name and date near the top of the front endpaper, a clipping pasted to the rear endpaper and pastedown upon which there are ink notes (and another ink note underneath the article on the pastedown), and finally some stains at the base of the rear endpaper and pastedown. All dust jackets have the $6.00 price present and all have edge wear, with varying degrees, to include wrinkles, abrasions, chips, and short closed tears. Closing the Ring and The Grand Alliance have a vertical waviness on the spine and Closing the Ring also has a 1/2" x 1" triangular chip at the base of the front panel. The jackets have fresh sleeves. The Houghton and Mifflin printings are the true first editions, preceding, by 4-10 months, each of their British (Cassell) counterparts.

Condition: Very Good

Description: A first edition set of William Churchill's groundbreaking memoirs regarding the Second World War. The first edition. In the publisher's full cloth binding with gilt lettering. All but volume six have their original unclipped dust wrappers. Volume six comes with a facsimile dust wrapper. These volumes retrace the history of the war from its beginnings in 1919 to 1944. Written from Churchill's personal point of view, from own notes and privileged access to official documents while still working as a politician, hence some facts had to remain secret. Considered a personal memoir by a leading participant in the direction of the war rather than a comprehensive history by a detached historian. This set comprises of: 'Volume I - The Gathering Storm', an introduction to the beginnings of war. With the half title page, seventeen diagram plates and one folding map. Collated complete. 'Volume II - Their Finest Hour', how the British people held the fort. With the half title page, eighteen diagram plates and three folding maps. Collated complete. 'Volume III - The Grand Alliance', detailing how Soviet Russia and the United States joined in the fighting. With the half title page, twenty-six diagram plates and two folding maps. Collated complete. 'Volume IV - The Hinge of Fate', how the power of the Grand Alliance became preponderant, including the onslaught of Japan and the war in Africa. With the half title page, thirty three diagram plates, four folding maps and one folding facsimile letter. 'Volume V - Closing the Ring', how Nazi Germany was isolated and assailed on all sides. With the half title page, nineteen diagram plates and three folding maps. Collated complete. 'Volume VI - Triumph and Tragedy', how the great democracies triumphed, and so were able to resume the follies which had so nearly cost them their life. With the half title page, sixteen diagram plates and eleven folding maps. Collated complete. Volumes one to five come with an additional facsimile wrapper, alongside the original. In the publisher's original, full cloth binding. Externally very smart with some shelf wear to the extremities. The odd light mark to the boards. Marks to the boards of volume one. Mark to the rear paste-down of volume one due to the removal of a label. All but volume six have their original dust wrapper. Dust wrappers are in very smart condition. Shelf wear to the edges with some chipping to the spine. Spines are darkened. A few small closed tears to the edges. Age-toning to the panels. The dust wrapper of volumes two, four and five have been repaired internally with tape. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean with a few scattered spots throughout, heavier in volume one. Pages age-toned but still clear. The occasional mark throughout. Spotting to the fore-edge of volume one, four, five and six. Several pages are uncut in volume five. Very Good

Description: First editions, first printings. Published by Cassell between 1948 and 1954. The collection is in very good (or better) condition, and as each volume is in very similar condition, I shall described them as a whole. The dust wrappers have not been price clipped, with the first four showing the original 25s net price, and the latter two 30s net. There is some mild shelf wear to the top and tail edges. The spines are partially faded, though the titles on said 'faded' volumes remain legible. The boards are free from chips and marks and are all tight at the spine and sharp at the corners, though the larger volumes do have a slight lean. The text blocks are markedly bright and with only very slight foxing present. Each volume is free from previous owners inscriptions and internally clean. Overall, this is a very good (or better) set of a great collection. "It was wholly appropriate that in 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature" (Keegan). Winston S. Churchill. The Second World War, full set of six British first editions. Cassell and Company, Ltd., London, 1948.

Price: US$900.00 + shipping

Description: This is a six-volume jacketed set of British first editions of The Second World War, Winston S. Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. This complete, first edition, first printing set features very good volumes in very good dust jackets. The black cloth bindings are square, tight, and clean with bright spine gilt. We note only trivial scuffs and a few bruised corners. The contents are likewise superior for the edition. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting is minimal and appears confined to the initial leaves and fore and bottom edges of the first two volumes. The red topstain is uniformly sunned to pink across all six volumes. The first printing dust jackets are all unclipped, retaining the original lower front flap prices and almost entirely complete, with only fractional hints of chipping to a few spine ends. While the jacket spines show various amounts of customary toning, all six red spine subtitles remain clearly legible. All six jackets are fitted with clear, removable, archival covers.Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history. it is a contribution to history." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office. I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly, The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains iconic, a vital part of the historical record. The six-volume epic has been called "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today."Please anticipate that this set may require additional postage depending on delivery method and destination.Reference: Cohen A240.4(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(ba), Langworth p.264.

Description: First UK editions, first impressions, of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War, and a major factor in Churchill being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the 20th century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". Churchill was contractually obliged to allow the US editions to be published first, but he treated the UK editions as definitive and reserved his final proof corrections for them. Price: US$1265.00 + shipping

Description: 6 volumes. First Editions. A profusion of maps and diagrams in all volumes. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, in the original dustjackets. xv, 527; xvii, 556; xviii, 629; xviii, 743; x, 558; xviii, 584; plus extensive appendices and index in each volume. A very well preserved and handsome set of the first editions, with bindings in excellent order and dustjackets in very nice condition with only light mellowing and a little rubbing to the extremities. NOBEL PRIZE WINNING FIRST EDITION. Upon hearing that President Roosevelt sought suggestions about what the war should be called Churchill replied, "The Unnecessary War." According to Churchill, "There never was a war more easy to stop than that which has just wrecked what was left of the world from the previous struggle." Churchill’s heartfelt opinion is reflected in the theme of the first volume, "How the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness and good nature allowed the wicked to rearm." Sir Winston Churchill ranks among the greatest men of history. He was born in 1874, a descendent of the great Duke of Marlborough. After an education at Harrow and Sandhurst he entered the army in 1895 and embarked on one of the most varied and distinguished careers of the century. He acted as a correspondent for the Morning Post during the Boer War and his dramatic escape from prison in Pretoria brought him to public attention. He embarked on his political career in 1900 by entering Parliament. While there he held many major offices of state: Home Secretary, Secretary of State for War, First Lord of the Admiralty in which he oversaw naval operations for the First World War, Colonial Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and eventually in 1940, Prime Minister. The latter office he would hold throughout World War Two and again from 1951 to 1955. It is unquestionably his office of Prime Minister during the Second World War for which he is best remembered. His powerful leadership and inspiring oratory held his nation and the free world together throughout the horrors of that conflict. He was a prolific writer, as this 6 volume set will attest, and in 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in spite of the fact that the work was not yet published in full. In that same year he was distinguished further by being made Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth II. These volumes were written and published over the course of seven years. Always submerged in multiple projects, he also finished his ‘History of the English Speaking Peoples’ and perfected his style of painting and wrote ‘Painting as a Pastime’ during this same time period. His death in 1965 sent the whole world into mourning and his funeral was one of the most moving public events of the century.

Description: Winston Churchill's memoirs of the Second World War, a complete first edition set in six volumes. The first edition, first impression of Winston S. Churchill's complete account of the Second World War in six volumes, each complete with its elusive, unclipped dust wrapper (only clipped to vol. III.)These volumes retrace the history of the war from its beginnings in 1919 to 1944. Written from Churchill's personal point of view, from own notes and privileged access to official documents while still working as a politician, hence some facts had to remain secret. Considered a personal memoir by a leading participant in the direction of the war rather than a comprehensive history by a detached historian. With maps and plans, and facsimiles of documents in text throughout, a number folding, some in colour.Books in the series are titled: The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring;andTriumph and Tragedy. Dust wrappers unclipped and sound with shipping to extremities of spine and wraps, lightly sunned to spine. Previous ownership ink inscription to front free endpaper vol. I dated 1948. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to fore edge, affecting occasional leaf, although generally pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Denis Kelly. I hope there isn’t a second gathering storm about to break!" -- 4 August 1948 holograph letter from "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly to Desmond Flower of Cassell regarding uncorrected errors in the soon-to-be published British first edition of the first volume of Winston S. Churchill's The Second World War, The Gathering Storm. Hyde Park Gate, London, 1948.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: This 4 August July 1948 holograph letter is from "indefatigable Churchill literary assistant" Denis Kelly to Desmond Flower of Cassell regarding uncorrected errors in the soon-to be published British first edition of the first volume of The Second World War, The Gathering Storm (published 4 October 1948). The holograph letter is inked entirely in Kelly’s hand on the recto of a sheet of Hyde Park Gate stationery. Dated by Kelly "11/8/48" (11 August 1948), it reads: "Dear Flower, I’ve found a number of rather hefty misprints in The Gathering Storm, & will send you a list " Kelly acknowledges " that it is too late to do anything about it now " but suggests a review protocol for Cassell to follow " before you print a second edition " Tellingly, Kelly concludes "I haven’t broken the news to W.S.C. yet, but I hope there isn't a second gathering storm about to break!" Pencil annotation at the upper left reads: "Mr. B [indecipherable} saw Mr. Kelly". The letter was acquired from an archive regarding Churchill’s publishing history with Cassell.Condition is near fine, clean with minor corner creases and centered vertical and horizontal folds consonant with original mailing. When Newman Flower of Cassell secured publication rights to Churchill’s war memoirs, it was "perhaps the greatest coup of twentieth century publishing." It fell to Newman’s son, Desmond John Newman Flower (1907-1997), to oversee the actual publication and manage an author of Churchill’s towering stature and exacting standards."Almost the last thing that Flower did before joining the Army in 1940 was to prepare the first volume of Churchill’s wartime speeches." Desmond landed in Normandy and won the MC in Operation Bluecoat in August 1944, returning to Cassell in 1946 to begin a new battle - to rebuild the firm, which had lost both its offices and warehouse to bombing and now faced the crippling constraint of paper rationing. Churchill’s post-war literary output, particularly the six volumes of The Second World War, not only ensured his own financial security, but also proved the essential asset to Cassell’s postwar recovery.Churchill was an author that Cassell could neither control nor do without. Churchill had written to Flower personally on 14 July not only to personal supply Errata and Corrigenda, but also to specify where they would be placed in the published edition. Further errors were identified just before the final binding, resulting in an additional tipped-in slip. Among the embarrassing errors (if one regards French military prowess) was describing the French Army as the ‘poop’ rather than the ‘prop’ of France. Churchill wrote to Flower on 10 August "I was shocked at some of the mistakes". By November of 1949, Cassell had bowed to its author and published a second edition of Volume I incorporating corrections.Denis Kelly (1916-1990) served during the Second World War in the Indian Mountain Artillery in India and Burma (1941-45). After the war Kelly joined Churchill’s literary team, first as an archivist, then as a literary assistant on Churchill’s war memoirs. On 14 May 1947, Churchill met Kelly at Chartwell. Showing him a cellar "stacked from floor to ceiling" Churchill tasked Kelly thus: "Your task, my boy, is to make Cosmos out of Chaos." Kelly approached the task with not only diligence, but some reverence: "I realised that I was handling the personal papers of a man who had experienced and shaped the history of the world in the last fifty years " (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.331.) Kelly became a vital part of Churchill’s literary team for the rest of Churchill’s productive life as an author, not only assisting with The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, but also preparing the abridged, one-volume Memoirs of the Second World War (published 1959). Kelly’s papers, including correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, now reside in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge.

Description: First UK editions, first impressions, of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War, and a major factor in Churchill being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. This set, in particularly appealing condition, is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the initial blanks. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. Winston S. Churchill. The Postwar Speeches, a full set of jacketed first editions: The Sinews of Peace, Europe Unite, In the Balance, Stemming the Tide, and The Unwritten Alliance. Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1948.

Price: US$2400.00 + shipping

Description: Here is a superior jacketed set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes, increasingly challenging to assemble thus. This set is among the best we have been able to offer. All five volumes in this set are in truly fine condition. Their jackets vary from very good plus to near-fine plus. All five cloth bindings are strikingly clean, tight, and square with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents of all five volumes are exceptionally clean. We find no previous ownership marks. The sole instance of spotting in the set is mild and entirely confined to the top edges of Stemming the Tide. The text block edges of all five volumes are otherwise clean apart from a little shelf dust to the top edges of The Sinews of Peace. The dust jackets are equally impressive. All five jackets are unclipped, retaining the original front flap prices. All five jackets are entirely unfaded, with exceptional color and shelf presentation. The only loss to report is fractional chipping at the spine head of The Sinews of Peace. The jackets are otherwise complete, and show only minor blemishes and varying degrees of light soiling to the white rear panels. Stemming the Tide has the more desirable and elusive first state dust jacket. All five dust jackets are fitted with clear, removable, archival covers. These volumes span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years – including the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the onset of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb, development of the hydrogen bomb, and the beginning of the space age. Even at the waning of his life and career, Churchill met and framed these exceptional times with a singularly experienced voice. By the time Churchill's first postwar speeches volume was published, his oratorical prowess was unrivaled in public life. Churchill had a remarkable full half century of vigorous public speaking and dozens of published volumes to his credit. Before his final volume of postwar speeches was published, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, both for his books and "for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values."Among many noteworthy speeches in these volumes is Churchill’s "Iron Curtain" speech given at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on 5 March 1946, where Churchill coined the phrase that described the division between the Soviet Union's sphere of influence and the West, incisively framing the Cold War that would dominate the second half of the twentieth century. There is also Churchill's 7 May 1948 speech to the Congress of Europe, which, along with other speeches, showed Churchill to be an early, ardent, and vital advocate of pan-European integration, and lent impetus to what would eventually become the European Union. And there is Churchill’s speech "The Twentieth Century - Its Promise and Its Realization," delivered in the spring of 1949 to an international conference tasked with exploring the socio-political implications of scientific progress. This speech is a tour de force survey of the period 1900-1945 that is both incisive and lyrical, humbling and inspiring. These postwar speech volumes are scarcer than Churchill’s War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each. Also of note, the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition. CHURCHILL, Winston.. The Second World War. [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy].. London London Cassell & Co. Ltd. -1954, 1948.

Price: US$2722.50 + shipping

Description: First edition, 6 vols; 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); illustrated with maps and charts, the odd, very minor, mariginal spot or mark but otherwise near-fine; modern half red morocco gilt, top edges gilt, housed in a leather-entry slip-case, a very handsome set. This magnum opus took the ageing Churchill some years to complete although he started making copious notes as early as 1940. Interestingly enough the first volume (the six volumes were published over a period of six years) begins from the end of the First World War and when it was published in 1948 there was some considerable controversy over Churchill's access to sensitive information unavailable to other historians. The remaining five volumes progress the journey right up until July 1945, encompassing Britain's 'darkest hour' to her finest. Churchill was already a prolific and highly regarded author and received the Nobel Prize in Literature (1953) 'for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.'

It was wholly appropriate that in 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature" (Keegan). Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. Price: US$3000.00 + shipping

Description: Here is a jacketed set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes, increasingly challenging to assemble thus. This set is unequivocally the best we have ever encountered, and virtually unobtainable thus. All five volumes in this set are in truly fine condition, their jackets near fine plus or better. All five cloth bindings are strikingly clean, tight, and square with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents of all five volumes are uniformly bright and as clean as the come. We find no spotting. We find no previous ownership marks. Even the page edges are impressively clean, with only light dust soiling to the top edges of The Sinews of Peace and a hint of age-toning to the otherwise immaculate Stemming the Tide and The Unwritten Alliance page edges. The dust jackets are remarkably impressive. All five jackets are unclipped, retaining the original front flap prices. All five jackets are entirely unfaded, with exceptional color and shelf presentation. Trivial shelf wear is confined to extremities and perhaps no worse than might be encountered if these books were brand new and just shelved in a local bookstore. Stemming the Tide has the more desirable and elusive first state dust jacket. The only flaw of note is a bit of spotting to the white flap fold corners of In the Balance and Stemming the Tide. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the onset of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb, development of the hydrogen bomb, and the beginning of the space age (to name a few). These postwar speech volumes are scarcer than Churchill’s War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each. Moreover, not all of the fourth volume’s sheets were issued in a dust jacket matching the rest of the volumes; the later issue dust jacket is solid black with no matching oak leaf border at the top and bottom edges. Also of note, the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition. CHURCHILL, Winston S.. The Second World War [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.]. London: Cassell & Co. Ltd, 1948-54, 1948.

Price: US$3204.97 + shipping

Description: First editions of Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of the Second World War. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the 20th century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted: "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there. [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity." Cohen A240.4; Woods A123(b). 6 volumes, octavo. Attractively bound in recent burgundy morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With diagrams and tables throughout the text. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set.

Written between 1948 - 1953, this stands as the best of history; written as it was made, by the man who made it. Churchill himself stating, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office. I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history. it is a contribution to history." The Gathering Storm - Churchill's critical observations on the settlement of World War I and its place in the causes of the Second World War. Containing letters and memoranda from the British government--of which Churchill was part--as the country plunged unprepared into war. Their Finest Hour - An enthralling account of key events and battles from May to December 1940 as Britain stood isolated while Nazi Germany pursued its seemingly unconquerable war path - the fall of France, Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain, the horrors of the Blitz and Hitler's plans to invade and crush Russia, his sole ally in Europe. The Great Alliance - The momentous events of 1941 surrounding America's entry into the War and Hitler's march on Russia - the continuing onslaught on British civilians during the Blitz, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and the alliance between Britain and America that shaped the outcome of the War. The Hinge Of Fate - How the tide of the war gradually turned for Britain and its allies from constant defeat to almost unbroken successes - Japan's successful assault on the Pacific, Britain's attempts to aid Russia and the defeat of Rommel at the Battle of Alamein. Closing The Ring - chronicles the period between June 1943 and July 1944 as the Allies consolidated their gains towards a drive to victory - the fall of Mussolini, Hitler's 'secret weapon', the mounting air offensive on Germany, strategies to defeat Japan and the plans for D Day. Triumph And Tragedy - Triumph and Tragedy recounts the dramatic months as the War drew to a close - the Normandy landings, the liberation of Western Europe, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the surrender of Germany and Japan. CHURCHILL, Winston S.. La Seconda Guerra Mondiale. (The Second World War.) [First two volumes].. Verona: Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, 1948, 1948.

Price: US$4486.95 + shipping

Description: First Italian editions, limited issue, the first two volumes only, inscribed by Churchill to his literary agent on the first blank of volume I, "Inscribed for Emery Reves by Winston S. Churchill, 1948"; numbers 12 and 13 respectively of 30 sets signed by the publisher. Reves was instrumental in promoting Churchill's pre-war international profile by the worldwide syndication of many of his prophetic articles during the late 1930s. Their association blossomed again when Reves negotiated the sale of the US rights for The Second World War, and purchased the international rights himself, selling serialization to 27 newspapers across the globe and securing book rights in 11 European countries. Churchill said of this feat: "I am sure that no one could have done it except Reves who buzzed around the world for nearly a year making contracts." They subsequently worked closely together on the book itself, Reves having what Martin Gilbert has described as "considerable editorial input". Mondadori, in keeping with both his anti-Fascist stance and his eye for commercial opportunity was one of the first to sign an agreement with Reves, and published just a week or so after Houghton, Mifflin put out Volume I in the USA, some three months ahead of Cassell's UK edition. The total print run comprised just 1,030 sets. 2 volumes only (of 12), octavo. Original blue leather-grain cloth, front cover blocked in blind with author's name, spines lettered in blue on gilt-blocked ground, top edges gilt, first volume in original marbled paper slipcase. Illustrated with plates and maps throughout. Front joint of part II splitting, edges a little rubbed, offsetting to verso of front free endpaper and half-title from inscription; slipcase rubbed, lower joint cracked but holding: overall in very good condition.

"The Gathering Storm," the inaugural volume of Winston Churchill's seminal work, "The Second World War," presents a meticulously researched and analytically rigorous examination of the geopolitical landscape preceding the global conflict. Published in 1948, Churchill, drawing extensively from his tenure as Britain's Prime Minister during the war, navigates the intricate web of political maneuverings, diplomatic failures, and ideological tensions that precipitated the outbreak of hostilities. Through a dispassionate lens, Churchill scrutinizes the shortcomings of leadership and policy that allowed totalitarian ambitions to thrive unchecked, offering incisive commentary on the complexities of international relations. Grounded in historical documentation and personal observations, "The Gathering Storm" serves as a cornerstone in the study of the prelude to World War II, providing invaluable insights into the mechanisms of power, diplomacy, and the human condition amidst a turbulent era of upheaval and uncertainty.

Price: US$10000.00 + shipping

Description: This very good set of First English editions in dust jackets is signed in Volume III on the half-title page: "Inscribed for Norman McGowan, Winston S. Churchill, 1951." NORMAN McGOWAN served as Winston Churchill's valet from 1949 until retiring in 1952. He subsequently published a memoir, MY YEARS WITH CHURCHILL, in 1958. A First English edition copy of that book (with M[a]cgowan's name misspelled on the dust jacket) is included here, preserved in a blue quarter-leather solander (stamped: THE SECOND WORLD WAR / Vol. III on the spine). Winston Churchill apparently presented his valet with signed copies of other volumes of THE SECOND WORLD WAR; in MY YEARS WITH CHURCHILL there is a photo of Mr. McGowan reading a signed First American edition copy of Volume IV. The dust jackets of this First English set are exceptionally bright on the faces, and significantly unfaded on the traditionally fade-prone spines. Volume I jacket spine has darkened with age but the spine type is still legible. There is edge-wear at the jacket spine heads of all volumes and Volumes IV-VI are price-clipped. The books are all fine, the black cloth clean and the bindings tight. The red topstains have faded variably, with the exception of very bright Volumes V and VI. The contents are fine, with foxing to the fore-edges only. A lovely set overall with an intimate provenance. First English Edition Set (Cohen A240.4[I-VI].a) (Woods A123ba).

CHURCHILL, Winston S.. The Second World War.. London: Cassell & Co. Ltd, 1948-54, 1948.

Price: US$11217.38 + shipping

Description: First UK editions, first impressions, inscribed by the author on the title page of Volume III: "To Ava from Winston S. Churchill 1955". The recipient was the political and social hostess Ava Anderson, Viscountess Waverley (1895-1974), who helped Churchill to warn the nation about German re-armament in the 1930s, and was closely linked to many of the leading players of Britain's wartime government. Ava's first husband was Ralph Wigram, head of the Central Department in 1935. Over many trips to Churchill's Chartwell home, when he was effectively exiled from government, the couple leaked him details of the scale of Germany's re-armament to Churchill, providing the evidence for him to attack the government's complacency. After Ralph's early death in 1936 Churchill continued a close and affectionate correspondence with Ava. In 1941 she married Sir John Anderson, Lord President of the Council and later Chancellor of the Exchequer in the wartime Cabinet. "She created for herself a role over four decades as a highly regarded hostess in political and cultural circles. Resilient in adversity, she brought warmth and contentment to John Anderson who was strongly protective of her. Forthright and astute, she was well suited to the position of political confidante, appreciated for her judgement and discretion as well as her lively personality. Churchill found her useful and Macmillan welcomed her sympathy and understanding. Intelligent, empathetic, witty, and outgoing, she was adept at eliciting information, but kept confidences to herself and could offer disinterested support, characteristics which substantiate the judgement that in her chosen sphere she 'probably exercise[d] more indirect influence than any woman of her generation' (The Times, 24 Dec 1974)" (ODNB). Churchill's masterpiece is the single most important historical account of the Second World War and a major factor in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. As Max Beloff observed, there was no statesman of the 20th century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking". Churchill was contractually obliged to allow the US editions to be published first, but he treated the Cassell editions as definitive and reserved his final proof corrections for them. Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes. Cohen A240.4; Woods A123(b). 6 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, grey endpapers decorated with a design that alternates a lion rampant with the initials W.S.C., top edges pink. With typographical dust jackets with background design to match endpapers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Publisher's announcement loosely inserted in vol. V. Some light spotting to edges; jackets with minor edge wear and a few closed tears, spine panels sunned, unclipped: a very good set in like jackets.
