One plate nearly detached and several pages, including two plates, show vertical red staining, albeit most staining marginal, with one plate and small amounts of text affected. What appears to be a printed/stampled former owner's book-plate on front free end-paper. Poor.

A small quarto measuring 9 7/8 by 7 1/2 inches with light rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and light rubbing to the cloth at the tips of the boards. There is a prior owner's name on the first free end page. In a good, plain tan, printed dust jacket with text on the spine and front panel with shallow chips at the upper and lower edges of the spine area with soiling to both panels and spine area. A small quarto measuring 9 7/8 by 7 1/2 inches containing 94 pages of text and 24 full color plate illustrations by Donald Maxwell. Facing each of the 24 color plates, which show maritime scenes and landscapes of the English countryside, is a selection of verse by Kipling. An attractive copy.

It is so important to have the first printing when the main reason for collecting a book is the pictures. The first prints of the fresh printing blocks are just that - they are fresh and new, unworn by subsequent print runs. This wonderful copy proves this fact. Great poetry, of course, by Kipling, but superb plates and drawings by Maxwell. Blue buckram binding, gilt titling, nice and firm binding, tight, the remarkably well preserved dust jacket is fine and under brodart mylar protection.
