Description: This is one of the recently "BANNED SIX" Dr. Seuss books. It is NOT a book club edition and arguably the most elusive of the six titles! It is NOT a first edition but it is an early 1960's printing. It has no ISBN and includes a very nice jacket and a rather mysterious Dr. Seuss-like drawing! Hardback book with dust jacket. The jacket is NOT price-clipped (295/295) on the front flap. There is some rubbing and a light red mark on the "S" in EGGS" and the "r" in "Super" on the cover. There are some small chips/tears/folds and a four larger tears (less than 1 1'2") but it presents very well under the clear mylar cover I've added. The matte (not the later shiny) picture cover book has some wear along the edges, corners and spine ends. There is a long gift inscription inside the front cover "To Granddaddy on your 87th birthday.August 15, 1969." Someone has added a doodle of a ship in the style of Dr. Seuss.pretty darling.I wonder who did that! The text pages are very clean and neat; there are no page tears or folds. The page which begins "The places I hiked to!" has a character hidden in the grass in the Dr. Seuss artwork and someone has written very neatly and discreetly (and drawn an arrow) "there he is". There is light age-toning on the back endpapers. Check out the photos! SCARCE WITH THE EARLY JACKET which is a 1960's printing because of the titles on the back (first section ends in Solla Sollew, "And for Beginning Readers" section ends in "Fox in Socks").

Description: A near fine first edition, with the correct list of titles on the back cover of the book and the dust jacket and the correct price of $2.50 on the front flap of the jacket. Later printings deleted the list of Seuss books on the back and changed the price on the jacket flap. This first edition has the original material which resulted in the recent decision of the Seuss estate to cease further publication of the book. However, even the most censorial reader will be hard pressed to find anything in the book that could be considered objectionable, much less racist, and certainly not by 1950's standards. Still, bound to be a collectible artifact forever for this artist, probably the most popular creator of illustrated children's books in history, at least based on books sold, read and reread, and enjoyed by children discovering the joy of reading. A large closed tear on the front panel of the dust jacket, but the jacket is completed otherwise very good. This is a large format book, and so usually turns up in very poor condition. This copy is in rare collectible condition.

Description: Signed with a gift inscription and original illustration on the blank side of the first free end paper. First Edition, First Printing with the original dust jacket. The book was originally gifted to a young woman on her 12th birthday by her Aunt and Uncle in 1953. They regularly attended cocktail parties with Theodor Geisel. Geisel inscribed the book, "To _, with Best Wishes - Dr. Seuss" and then drew - what may possibly be - a cartoon version of himself, complete with bowtie, glasses (?) and beard. On the last blank page is an inscription, "To Linda - Happy Birthday from Uncle Mike and Aunt Emily. 29 August, 1953 - La Jolla, Calif". The boards are bright with faint soiling. Interior binding is tight, however, the spine is almost detached, having separated from the front board. Ends of spine are chipped, edges and corners are rubbed, corners are bumped. The book interior shows evidence of having been well-loved with scattered soiling and smudging, occasional creasing, page edge toning, and faint streaking on a few pages where liquid was possibly spilled and wiped up. Foxing and toning to endpapers. Owner's childhood bookplate inside front cover. The dust jacket is rubbed, chipped, soiled, creased and scuffed with a few large closed tears, including a 4" closed tear on the front cover. Dust jacket is covered in a protective mylar jacket.
