Some of course are shocked by its apparent racism and blatant snobbery, while many academics prefer to ignore it in writing courses for fear of giving offence. Its subtle insights, wit and irony, brilliant use of viewpoint, dialogue and background colour have seldom been exceeded. It's a work of its time, but so are all literary classics and other art forms. Then ask any journalist if it doesn't still have relevance today. The idea of Fake News is treated with its merciless lampooning of "who and what" makes "headlines". A NEAR VG++ copy of the 1st./1st. with some slight age and wear but no dust jacket.* 0 313 pp. 1938-01-01

Waugh, Evelyn. SCOOP. A Novel About Journalists. London, Chapman & Hall, 1938.

Price: US$330.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First Edition. First edition, first issue, with the "8" in the publication date indistinct, and the "s" present in "as" to the last line of p. 88. Publisher's red and black marble-patterned cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. A very good copy, spine with a slight lean and lightly toned, a touch of rubbing to extremities. Scoop is a humorous novel in which Waugh satirizes foreign correspondence and sensational journalism. Specifically, it tells the story of William Boot, an inexperienced journalist and author of a nature column for The Beast. This real life reporter was identified as Lord Deeds. Boot is mistakenly identified as his novelist cousin and sent to the fictional East African country of Ishmaelia to cover its socialist insurrection. Ironically, Boot's naïveté allows him to get the real "scoop" not reported by more experienced journalists. Notably, Scoop is based on Waugh's own experiences working as a journalist for the British Daily Mail during Mussolini's 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. With an old bookplate, see picture

Evelyn Waugh's supreme 1930s Fleet Street satire. Following publication, there was a vibrant quest for models. Fleet Street folklore has William Boot based on William Deedes and Lord Copper on lords Northcliffe and Beaverbrook. Scoop was made into a BBC serial in 1972 and also a television film scripted by William Boyd in 1987, starring Denholm Elliott, and directed by Gavin Millar. The fictional newspaper owned by Lord Copper in Scoop has also been the inspiration for the title of Tina Brown's online American publication, the 'Daily Beast'.

WAUGH, Evelyn.. Scoop. A Novel About Journalists.. London Chapman & Hall, 1938.

Price: US$3025.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue in second state dust jacket; 8vo; strictly contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper, stock a little toned as often, with 's' in 'as' in last line of p88; publisher's black and red patterned boards, with the original dust jacket, without the 'Daily Beast' logo; a very good copy in the lightly frayed and rubbed dust jacket with a single tiny chip and some needless internal repair. There are two states of the first impression dust jacket for Scoop. Originally the tromp l'oiel newspaper image had the partial banner 'aily Beas' in the style and typeface of the Daily Express. Beaverbrook (himself lampooned in the novel as Lord Copper) cited the mast head in his proposed action against Waugh and Chapman & Hall who restruck the jackets with the masthead entirely blank. However, they left the devastating descriptions of 'Lord Copper' intact. And they got away with it!

Waugh, Evelyn. Scoop. London Chapman & Hall Ltd. 1938, 1938.

Price: US$6237.82 + shipping

Description: First edition. With the full "as" to page 88. In what appears to be an advance or trial dust jacket, with no price or advertising, differing quite considerably from the published version. Significant differences include: the lettering to the spine, with 'Scoop' appearing horizontally in white, corresponding to the gilt lettering on the book beneath and leaving a large blank middle orange section; the layout of Waugh's blurb to the front panel, with no caption beneath the photograph; the photograph is of higher resolution; there is no orange bar above the 'Daily Beast' masthead and the orange border around the blurb is more ragged. The jacket is bibliographically interesting and should help quell debate around the priority of the published dust jackets, reducing the need to rely upon the plausible but unsubstantiated theory that Lord Beaverbrook threatened legal action and caused the 'Daily Beast' masthead to be removed. The simpler theory is that the 'Daily Beast' masthead detracts attention from 'Scoop', which is after all the title of the book, and was removed for this reason. The existence of this advance jacket would indicate that a number of significant stylistic changes were made, the masthead initially left in place, probably too many printed to be discarded, then the decision to also remove the masthead was taken and the remaining jackets without the masthead printed, with all being released to the public simultaneously. The book is firmly bound, the boards are clean, with light rubbing and bumping to the corners and spine ends. The text block is slightly toned and dusty with minor marks, there are two bookplates to the front endpaper, one the armorial bookplate of bibliophile, Christopher Freville Huntley, the other smaller and without adornment of an unidentified Frederick Woods. The dust jacket had survived the decades by being quite significantly reinforced top and bottom with Sellotape, it has now been professionally conserved to help it survive the decades to come, with no attempt at prettification, there are quite large areas of loss to all panels other than the flaps, as well as rubbing, creasing and burn marks from the tape. There are no readily locatable references to the existence of other examples of the jacket in this advance state, so this conceivably may be the sole survivor. Quite a nice copy of the book, in an unprepossessing but potentially bibliographically important dust jacket.

Evelyn Waugh. Scoop. Chapman & Hall, London, 1938.

Price: US$7147.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: HARDBACK - A very good or better book, bound in the publisher's patterned boards with bright gilt lettering to the spine. The boards are in lovely condition, free of any bumping to the corners, with just the mildest of fading to the spine. Internally, the pages are clean, with a neat book plate present to the front end-paper. There are a few foxing spots to the paste block also with associated light toning. The inner text is clean, free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The dust wrapper is the correct UK first edition with the Daily Beast present to the upper front panel, which is in very good condition with chipping to the spine tips, also with minor loss to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. Shallow rubbing to the extremities with some small closed tears, but overall a clean, fresh dust wrapper with no fading to the orange spine. The correct printed price of 7/6net is present to the front lower flap, denoting a correct UK first edition printing. The first issue dust wrapper was quickly withdrawn by Chapman & Hall due to the threat of Court action from Lord Beaverbrook who was furious at the type setting of the Daily Beast, which had distinct similarities to his Daily Express mast head. The Daily Beast type set was immediately dropped from the books printing by Chapman & Hall to avoid such court actions, making the Daily Beast copies scarce to acquire.

Description: First edition, first issue, with the "8" in the publication date indistinct, and the "s" present in "as" to the last line of p. 88. Publisher's red and black marble-patterned cloth, lettered in gilt to spine; original red and white dust jacket with newspaper design to front panel, panels lettered in black, spine lettered in white. About near fine with a touch of fading to spine, very light spotting to top edge of text block, and front board slightly bowed; in a good dust jacket with light fading to spine, moderate chipping to spine ends with some loss to "Evelyn" and "Chapman and Hall," corners chipped, and minor edgewear with small closed tears to bottom of front panel and top of rear panel. Overall, a completely unsophisticated example of the scarce original dust jacket. Scoop is a humorous novel in which Waugh satirizes foreign correspondence and sensational journalism.
