CHAPMAN, Abel. SAVAGE SUDAN Its Tribes, Big-Game and Bird-Life. Gurney and Jackson, London and Edinburgh, 1921.

Price: US$193.24 + shipping

Description: Green illustrated cloth covers. f/piece (map)+xx+452, over 50 ills (mostly photos) on 29 plates ex-pagination, '248 illustrations, chiefly from rough sketches by the author', these small and freuqent throughout the text, some as end-pieces, top edge gilt, other edges uncut; 1928-dated sig. to front end-paper, several incipient gutter openings which have only slightly affected text-block tightness, otherwise clean and unmarked; covers, with gilt wart-hog centre front and gilt water buffalo centre back, have only slight rubbing to extremities and top front joint, but marred by widespread whitish flecks which look life pigment loss but are in fact not, even so resist removal. Despite faults an acceptable copy of this sought after and scarce work. Although author describes himself as a 'hunter-naturalist' there is actually scant evidence of the former here, rather he displays a real passion for wild-life and his account phas, I imagine, some enduring evidential value. On the other hand is an imperialist of the old school in his attitude to the local 'wild tribes'.
