Blue cloth with titles in black, black and gold decorated end-papers, illustrations (frontis and 16 plates with caption on opposite verso) by John Vassos, a new edition uniform with Oscar Wilde's "The Ballad of Reading Goal" and "The Harlot's House" with four new illustrations. Small light spots to boards, spine ends browned and frayed, contents very good with prior owner name written and stamped on recto of fronti, dust jacket worn, torn, and chipped with significant loss. Description: 57 pp. Frontispiece. Black cloth with embossed gilt lettering. 13 black and white plates by John Vassos. Patterned gilt and stars endpapers; ffep ha closed 2" tear. Spine and extremities sun faded. Spine lightly scratched and corner tips worn. Toning around the edges of the pages, otherwise the plates are in excellent condition. Clean and tight throughout. A beautifully produced edition of this play. It tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. There is a very brief gift inscription on the recto of the frontispiece, and there is a semi-lengthy poem in pen on the recto of the rear free endpaper. In a very attractive dust jacket, with clipped corners, chipping to the ends of the spine, and a small chip along the front fold of the spine. Includes sixteen black and white illustrations by the illustrator of Salome, John Vassos. John Vassos was a 1930's book illustrator and long-term industrial designer. Vassos' interpretation of Wilde's masterpiece, illustrating the emotional experiences of a condemned prisoner in his last days. Early printing of the edition illustrated by John Vassos.
