Spine and extremities sun faded. Spine lightly scratched and corner tips worn. Toning around the edges of the pages, otherwise the plates are in excellent condition. Clean and tight throughout. A beautifully produced edition of this play. It tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. In a very attractive dust jacket, with clipped corners, chipping to the ends of the spine, and a small chip along the front fold of the spine. Includes sixteen black and white illustrations by the illustrator of Salome, John Vassos. John Vassos was a 1930's book illustrator and long-term industrial designer. Vassos' interpretation of Wilde's masterpiece, illustrating the emotional experiences of a condemned prisoner in his last days. Early printing of the edition illustrated by John Vassos.
