Description: First edition thus, illustrated by Vassos, of Oscar Wilde's one-act Biblical play - with plates in bold Art Deco style and flavors of Beardsley. Due to a ban on portraying Biblical figures on stage, SALOME was not performed publicly in England until 1931. This was John Vassos' first work; he would go on to apply the Art Deco aesthetic to industrial design for the RCA and others. 9.25'' x 7''. Original black boards with metallic gold-stamped titles. Black endpapers with metallic gold patterns. Lacking scarce original dust jacket. Black-and-white full-page frontispiece with 11 full-page black-and-white plates and silver metallic stars to every page. Light sunning to edges of boards, with mild shelfwear; spine ends somewhat bumped. Light soil to verso of frontispiece, occasional very light foxing to margins. Else sound and bright.

Bright pink, black and gold dust jacket has several tears and is faded at the spine. Head and tail of the spine of the dust jacket are chipped. Now protected in a mylar jacket. Gorgeous black and gold end papers, silver stars throughout book. From the jacket, "This is the first time that Wilde's famous play has been illustrated with drawings that were interpretations of the text and not mere decorations." Some foxing throughout book, otherwise clean with a tight binding.

Uniform edition with "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" and "The Harlot's House", with the addition of 4 new illustrations. With 17 illustrations by John Vassos. Nice clean copy.

Fully decorated with shiny stars around every page of text and numerous b/w illustrated plates throughout. Interior is unmarked with bits of minor toning from age. Black paper boards are titled in art deco gold letters. Very lightly worn with sunned spine. Binding secure. Faint foxing along bottom edge of text block. Scarce slipcase is heavily worn along the edges and mildly scuffed. Short section of upper edge missing. Spine has been shoddily repaired with green electrical tape by a previous owner.

Description: SIGNED. 57pp. Small quarto [23 cm] Black boards with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Decorative endpapers. The backstrip is faded, and the boards are also discolored at the edges (more so the rear board). The front board is a bit marked, with the most prominent mark measuring roughly 2". There is a previous owner's name in the inside margin of the terminal leaf. "Salome" was the first of nine books that would be illustrated by Vassos between 1927 and 1935. Includes thirteen black and white illustrations by John Vassos who also designed the endpapers. Number 242 in an edition limited to 500. Signed by Vassos on the limitation page.

Salome dances the Dance of the Seven Veils so well that she receives a boon from her stepfather Herod Antipas. Much to his dismay and her mother's delight she requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Though John is a favorite of Herod and under his protection, Herod cannot rescind his boon. Wilde originally wrote the play in French, and it was translated three years later into English.
