King, Stephen. Salem's Lot. Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1975.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Early book club edition with original first edition book and wrapper design with code 1518 at back flap. 1975 at copyright; no other dates. "A New Novel by the Author of Carrie". Blood red boards, smooth leather-like spine wrap, gilt impressed spine titles, light shelf wear. Deckled pages, near fine. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Dust wrapper slight shelf wear; protected in new clear sleeve. Very attractive. Features the original jacket illustration by Dave Christensen with bold white and orange titles over black with quiet hamlet pictured at center of the "O". Back panel with review blurbs for this title. One of Stephen King's true classics, where he offers an interpretation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. In SK's second published novel he describes Salem's Lot as a town first touched by an evil and horrific murder-suicide involving a prominent citizen - and former hitman - named Hubie Marston. And, now overlooked by this empty and terrible house. The village has its collection of small-town secrets and moral corruptions, though, and is finally invaded by a Vampiric plague, starting with the shadowy new owner of the Marston House, Richard Straker, and his familiar, Kurt Barlow. Another new resident, writer Ben Mears who grew up in the town, joins with a local doctor, a teacher, and young Mark Petrie to fight against the town's demise. Salem's Lot knew darkness and the awful, heavy silence of terrifying images grotesquely dancing in and out of the shadows. Stark, white faces, huge, glowing eyes and long, gnarled hands that reached out with lustful insistence. The paralyzing fear of a diabolical corruption and hideous peril more dreadful than death. But, no one in Salem's Lot dared to speak of the high, sweet, evil laughter of a child, and the terrible sucking sounds. Larger 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" design. 405 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

King, Stephen. Salem's Lot', US first edition second state dust jacket with 'Father Cody'. Doubleday, 1975.

Price: US$2629.48 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Stephen King (1975) ‘Salem’s Lot‘, US first edition second printing book (indicated by the Q41 gutter code at the back), published by Doubleday. Together with a first edition, second state dust jacket with all issue points present: The $7.95 price printed above ‘Salem’s’ on the front flap next to the clipped old price; and Father Cody mentioned in the blurb as called for. The value of this item lies in the dust jacket. Condition: The dust jacket is a nice example. There is some of the usual light rubbing to the folds as show. One tear to top fold of about 12mm length. Another smaller tear of about 5mm to the bottom fold. Light soiling and ageing spots to the rear, particularly along the folds where a little air was allowed to circulate. Something between very good and near fine commensurate with age. The actual book is near fine with just a whiff of foxing to the page block which is barely visible. Salem’s Lot was published in a low print run of 20,000 copies. However, the dust jacket is much scarcer as a third state exists with $8.95 printed and Father Callahan quoted on the front flap’s blurb. As a result, some first editions are found with the second state dust jacket and some with the third state version. The first state, which was never released to the public, was the pre-clipped version of the dust jacket seen here. Therefore it was not clipped at the top front flap and had a price of $8.95 printed. Only six copies survived the clipping procedure. First and Fine

Price: US$5975.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Doubleday. Garden City, New York. 1975. 409 pages. SIGNED, inscribed and dated by Stephen King directly to FFEP. To ___- Nice to see you again! Stephen King 10/19/89. First Book Club edition in same design as the First printing with red paper boards quarterbound in black with gilt titles on backstrip. No mention of any King titles other than Carrie and Salem's Lot on DJ. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong. Gilt is bright and unrubbed. Red paper boards are bright and clean. Faint shallow stain along bottom panel edges. Light shelf-rub at base on black binding. Pages lay tight and undisturbed; seemingly unread. FFEP corner has previous owners names neatly written in ink. DJ in same design and artwork as the first printing. DJ is about fine; only flaw is some sunning to red hue on the title on the spine. An early copy of Stephen King's second title and arguably most difficult title. Considering Stephen King no longer signs backlog, a signed copy of his most difficult title speaks for itself. A solid, bright VG or better copy in near fine DJ. Signed, dated and inscribed by Stephen King.
