Interfacia translations of the classical Italian poet who was a great influence of Dante. Dante of course, through the troubadours, would himself be a major influence on Pound.

Published about a week after the US edition, with revisions to Pound's introduction and the translations, the British edition is scarce, a large portion of the print run having been destroyed by a fire at the binders. Gallup B4b. Octavo. Original streaky grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, edges untrimmed. Text printed in English and Italian, 32 pp. of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Ownership inscription of Francis Berry, possibly the poet and professor of English literature (1915-2006), to front free endpaper. Spine slightly bumped and toned, a very good copy.

Description: 8vo, 135pp + publisher's ads; original streaked gray cloth stamped in gilt. Pound revised the contents, both the translations and the introduction, for this edition, which followed the U.S. publication by a month. Although the press run is unknown, this edition has long been less common than its American counterpart, likely owing to the fact that the bulk of the edition, in the form unbound sheets, were destroyed by a fire at the binder's. This copy bears the publisher's "presentation copy" blindsamp on the first page of the introduction. Although Gallup justly counts translations among "A" items, it is no doubt the presence of the Italian originals alongside Pound's renditions here that relegates this book to his B section. Gallup B4b. A pair of tiny, old wormholes; spine faded slightly; scattered very light pencil annotations, still an attractive copy, bright and clean.

Description: London, Stephen Swift and Co., 1912. In-8, pleine percaline grise éditeur, auteur, traducteur et titre dorés, 135-32 (catalogue imprimé en rouge et noir) pages. Édition originale anglaise de la traduction dEzra Pound, parue la même année que lédition originale américaine qui la précède (Boston, 1912) mais comportant quelques variantes et repentirs dans lintroduction et la traduction des sonnets VII et XVI, notamment. Exemplaire sur vergé. Cette édition bilingue trouva peu décho et les stocks, de part et dautre de lAtlantique, connurent un triste sort. Elle ne fut rééditée que 50 ans plus tard par New Directions à New York. En France, il fallut attendre encore 30 de plus une traduction intégrale des Rime pour que parvienne jusquà nous laura étrange et magnifique des poèmes de cet intime du Dante dont Guy Debord, à plusieurs reprises dans son existence, prit le nom pour pseudonyme. En 1934, dans A.b.c. de la lecture, Ezra Pound notait à lattention de ces étudiants anglophones : « Sans connaître Dante, Guido Cavalcanti ou Villon, personne ne peut juger des sommets atteints par certaines catégories de lécriture. Sans la connaissance, dans les autres langues, de ce MINIMUM que je viens de citer, vous ne pouvez simplement pas savoir « où en est la poésie anglaise » ». Quelques rousseurs sur les gardes.
