Price: US$178.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A. H. Wheeler & Co. Indian Railway Library, Allahabad, India, 1889. No 5 in the Indian Railway Library. Stated Second Edition. The “soft” hardcovers in grey-green card covers are consistent with Kipling’s plan with the publisher A.H. Wheeler, which dominated railways station bookstalls, to offer inexpensive reading materials to railway passengers. Typically the works had already been published in other Indian periodicals for which Kipling wrote, front matter notes “Reprinted In Chief From The ‘Week’s News’” Reportedly the initiative was a fund raiser by Kipling so he could return to England; original price was one rupee. Title to front board in gilt “The Phantom Rickshaw &c.” Boards show some mild blistering, as if from light water damage, but there is no penetration to paste-downs, text block is clean, binding is square and tight, pages flow freely, fore-edge is marbled, light pencil markings of prior seller and prior owners name on title page “Rhoda Morris” over has damaged corners, the back part is included but has become detached. The text is very good. Included "My Own True Ghost Story", "The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes", and the "The Man Who Would Be King”
