Condition: Very Good

Description: Large, beautiful hardcover measures 9 x 11, complete with 20 tipped-in color plates - each plate has tissue guard. Gilt on spine and front board; thick, heavy gauge pages. For its age, binding is pretty strong and secure. Condition: this is an older book with some general rubbing to the front board and along spine. Light fraying at top spine, corner tips. There is a gift inscription on illustrated endpaper. Then some average age-toning to the pages, occasional foxing. Fitzgerald, Edward. With illustrations by Edmund Dulac. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.. Hodder and Stoughton [1909], London, 1909.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Description: First trade edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, with English Verse from Edward Fitzgerald's second translated edition and illustrations by Edmund Dulac. Quarto, original publisher's gold-stamped cloth, gilt tltles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers, title page on Japanese vellum, with 20 intricate full color plates tipped in to decorated Japaneses vellum mounts with lettered tissue guards. In near fine condition. Eleventh-century Persian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam composed more than one thousand quatrains, or rubaiyat, on love and mortality, expressing an enigmatic theology that has been interpreted and disputed over the course of centuries. Scholar Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883), first translator and author of five separate English versions of the Rubaiyat, did not produce strict translations as much as loose "transmogrifications" of the poetry, often taking great liberties with the original Persian text. Nevertheless, he remains the most famous of Omar Khayyam's translators, and is credited with bringing the Rubaiyat to broad public notice in the English-speaking world.

DULAC, Edmund (illus.); FITZGERALD, Edward.. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. Rendered into English Verse.. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1909], 1909.

Price: US$736.50 + shipping

Description: First Dulac trade edition, first impression. Edmund Dulac's illustrations for the Rubáiyát helped to confirm his position as "a direct challenger in the illustrated gift book market to the work of Arthur Rackham" (ODNB). Fitzgerald's translation was first published in 1859 and slowly gained recognition as a masterpiece of English literature. By the early 1900s many of Fitzgerald's phrases had entered the common stock of English quotations and allusions; a growing "cult of the Rubáiyát" found expression in "the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America" (Yohannan, p. 202). Hughey, in her bibliography of Dulac, records the opinion of the publisher George H. Doran (who published the American edition). Doran stated that "the book was a joy and a treasure. Its public acceptance was immediate and great". Hughey 21a. John D. Yohannan, Persian Poetry in England and America, 1977. Quarto. Original cream cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with elaborate design in gilt, patterned endpapers. Colour frontispiece and 19 colour plates mounted on cream paper, captioned tissue-guards, by Edmund Dulac. Spine slightly toned, binding a little soiled, occasional foxing and browning; a very good copy with uncreased plates.

Price: US$764.50 + shipping

Description: First edition thus, from the second Quaritch un-illustrated edition (with the additional quatrains). 20 beautiful full page color plates by Edmund Dulac. 4to, publisher’s original full red cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in pictorial designs in gilt on the spine and upper cover. A very bright, clean and handsome copy with exceptional color plates. FIRST EDITION IN THE BRIGHT RED CLOTH. Announced in June 1909, Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of the 12th century Persian RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, newly illustrated by Edmund Dulac, became the Gift Book of the year. Each page of verses or quatrains was printed on heavy paper surrounded by delicate borders and was frequently interspersed with Dulac’s evocative paintings. After the RUBAIYAT’S publication in America, its US publisher wrote of the book."In point of excellence of art, popularity, distinction and profit the crowning achievement.was the publication of the Fitzgerald version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam illustrated by Edmund Dulac. The book was a joy and a treasure, Its public acceptance was immediate and great." -A.Hughey. One can see why the book received such immediate and unalloyed admiration. For on these twenty exquisitely detailed pages, one finds unsurpassed artistic expression. The viewer is irresistibly drawn into the Persian poetical world of starry nights, labrythine bazaars, dusty streets, flower perfumed bowers, and sultry royal palaces. We can almost smell the pungent incense and feel the hot air move as the fan stirs a tiny breeze. We are palpably drawn into Dulac’s hypnotic images of Middle Eastern sensation and emotion. The artist used intense but subtle tones of color to create a rich tapestry of visual contrasts, page after page. Pale flesh is swathed in delicate patterned silks and set to pose on hillsides of velvet grass. Figures emerge from opalescent nights and drink thirstily from silver goblets. Dulac vividly captures the temptations of the senses as Omar himself succumbed to them. The RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM illustrations portray a humanity, poignant and complex, as perhaps nowhere else in Dulac’s repertoire. The modern reader can partake of Fitzgerald’s spell-binding translation of one of the finest poems ever written, while sipping the spiced wine of Dulac’s sensuous illustrations.

A review in The London Times on 18 October 1909 praised the work: "As a designer Mr. Dulac is wonderfully varied, and as a draughtsman often exquisite. His colour, too, is charming, with the preciosity that is to be expected from an illustrator of a poet of the East." Dulac (1882-1953) studied art at the university in his native Toulouse before emigrating to England when he was 22, at just the time when the process of color separation was making it possible to print faithfully the glowing colors of his palette. Between 1907, when his "Arabian Nights" appeared, and 1920, his works found an appreciative audience. Influenced by the work of the older artist Arthur Rackham, Dulac's illustrations have a sophisticated and exotic tone with rich color, reminiscent of the paintings of Gustav Klimt. Houfe says, "Dulac was immensely versatile and had more sense of color and design than most of his English contemporaries, excepting Rackham. He looked to the Middle and Far East for inspiration, and his watercolors of legendary subjects have a gemlike brilliance found only in Mogul miniatures, their flat, stylized and sleepy beauty sometimes comes from the Japanese print, sometimes from the Pre-Raphaelites and even occasionally from the Renaissance." After 1920, Dulac, who had become a naturalized British citizen, published several more illustrated fairy tales and also worked as a designer of costumes and sets. Hughey 21. John D. Yohannan, Persian Poetry in England and America, 1977. Quarto.
