Luxuriously pochoir-colored illustrations by British artist Fish with protective tissue-papers (the tissue paper for Plate 17 is torn but present). One-quarter navy cloth with blue-grey paper boards; illustrated endpapers. Gilt lettering along spine. Previous owner's book stamp on front endpaper. Covers show significant edge wear with rubbing, scuffing and bumped corners. Spine shows rubbing to edges. Pages are predominantly clean and unmarked, lightly tanned with some page-turn soiling marks. Description: The First UK Edition thus published by in 1922. The BOOK is in Very Good ++ condition. Quarto, about 11.5 inches (29.5 cm) tall, in bright patterned cloth with gilt spine titling and motif. Some rubbing to the corners and book edges. Slight pushing at the spine tips.Gilt titling remains bright. Hinges beginning to ease but the book remains tight. Orange bookmark still present but separated at the spine end. 108 pages illustrated by 20 colour plates including the second half title, and elaborate initial capitals in orange and black. The plates have tissue guards (which are all present with mild creasing to the first one which is also loose) and the illustrations are imaginative art deco style productions decorated in gilt and silver and in bright colours. All illustrations are present. Frontispiece has minor marking to the edges of the illustration. Anne Harriet Fish (1890-1964) was a respected British artist and illustrator. In her nearly 15-year career at Condé Nast, she produced 30 covers and hundreds of illustrations depicting modern society, often cynically. A truly wonderful period illustrated edition of the 'Rubaiyat'. This book often turns up in a plain grey monochrome cover edition. Scarce to find in the true first issue gloriously patterned covers.
