With gilt and deep red stamped scroll pattern on front covers, gilt flourishes and lettering stamped on spine with red morroco spine label. Bookplates on both front pastedown of both volumes. Some slight bleeding from the red stencil (or pochoir) fleur-de-lis on the front cover of each volume (see photo) and a slight gouge to lower edge of rear cover of Vol. I. Volume I has the tag of photographer-bookseller Giacomo Brogi (Florence, Via Tornabuoni 1) on front pastedown. Published the same year as the English first edition. A charming set that remains well bound.

Description: This is a handsome, Civil War-era set of "ROMOLA" by George Eliot with original dust jackets and slip cases. 1863; Bernhard Tauchnitz; Leipzig, Germany. Complete set in two volumes. The set is beautifully bound in full vellum with gilt decorations and lettering on the covers and spines, decorative gilt end papers, ribbon page markers, and gilt top page edges. Each volume contains numerous full-page illustrations. The dust jackets are made of a sturdy canvas-type of material. Condition: Light soiling and foxing to the covers. Sharp covers corners. Bright gilt top page edges. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. The text pages of both volumes are in nice condition - clean with no notable issues found. Both ribbon page markers are attached, but are frayed where they connect to the spines, and at various places along their lengths including the outer tips. Overall the books are in Very Good condition. The jackets have some soiling, primarily at the spines; light chipping at the top and bottom edges of the spine.overall the jackets are in Good+ condition. Light soiling to the slip cases with mild wear at some of the corners.overall the slip cases are in Very Good condition.

With the exception of a half-inch superficial crack to one hinge, the binding is in beautiful condition, preserved by red canvas dust jackets. Extra-illustrated with 19th century photos of Florence.
