Pollard Alfred William Pollard, FBA (14 August 1859 – 8 March 1944) was an English bibliographer, widely credited for bringing a higher level of scholarly rigor to the study of Shakespearean texts. Pollard wrote widely on a range of subjects in English literature throughout his career, and collaborated with various scholars in specialized studies; he edited Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophel in 1888, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (Globe edition, 1898), a collection of Fifteenth Century Poetry and Prose (1903) and Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur (1910–11, in four volumes). His Shakespeare Folios and Quartos: a Study in the Bibliography of Shakespeare's Plays, 1594–1685, published in 1909, remains an important milestone in Shakespearian criticism. Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham Arthur Rackham RWS (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 colour pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since – through colour-separated printing – it featured the accurate reproduction of colour artwork. His best-known works also include the illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. Pollard. Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory compiled mythical tales of the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Knights. First published in 1485 and now one of the best-known works of Arthurian literature; masterfully edited by Alfred Pollard (1859 - 1944). In his own words, he "tried to clear away some of the underwoods that the great trees may be better seen, and though I know that I have cleared away some small timber that is fine stuff in itself, if the great trees stand out the better, the experiment may be forgiven." This edition contains a series of dazzling color plates and b&w illustrations - by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (from 1850 until the First World War), Rackham's artistry is simply unparalleled. Rackham developed a unique style, combining haunting humor with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further elucidate the wonderful ballads of yesteryear. Description: First trade edition, first impression, attractively bound. Rackham was commissioned to produce this wartime publication to inspire the British public with the heroic deeds and battles of their forebears. A contemporary review in The Bookman stated that "the beauty and bizarre loveliness of the tales seem to have passed by some subtle alchemy into Mr Arthur Rackham's fanciful, whimsical, imaginative drawings in colour and black-and-white. This is an ideal edition of a very characteristic old English classic" (December 1917). Latimore & Haskell, pp. 47-8; Riall, p. 130. Quarto (202 x 162 mm). Near-contemporary red calf by Bayntun (Rivière), Bath, spine with raised bands, flower, knight and shield gilt tools in compartments, covers bordered with a double gilt fillet, intricate gilt decoration to board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Description: Stated and hand-numbered in red at limitation page: "Of this large paper edition two hundred and fifty copies have been printed of which this is number: "109". Rare larger limited edition printed by MacMillan & Company of London. Oversize gift book design at apprx. 9" x 11 1/2" x 2" weighing nearly 4 1/2 lbs. Very stylish fountain pen signature inside cover at front pastedown: "John Jacob Astor, Christmas 1920." Intriguing association example acquired by prior collector from an estate descendent of the Astor family. Set in cover is a small printed Christmas card with classic carolling motif from New York business magnate Bradish Gaillard Johnson. Likely Gaillard gifted this volume to a young fatherless "Jakey." Prior collector also associates Gaillard Johnson with the Astors as family friends. The Astors were the or near the wealthiest American family in the ninetheenth century from the fur trade, railroad and ship construction, opium trade, real estate, etc. John Jacob Astor VI, or young "Jakey," was known as the Titanic baby as his father, the Colonel JJA IV (who opposed the institution of the Federal Reserve central bank in America), perished on the mythic unsinkable. John Pierpont Morgan infamously missed scheduled boarding in England. JJA VI's mother, Madeleine Astor, survived while five months pregnant with him and is portrayed in the 1997 film. Men and most onboard may have also been rescued, but for an insufficient number of life boats, etc. Publisher's morocco boards in white, gilt embossed cover and spine titles, moderate shelf, spine wear ripple, rub, nicking, small area of scrape. Bright gilt cover design features finely detailed bugler knight on regaled horseback; gilt spine design features titles with stylized royal lion vignette. Bright gilded smooth exterior top edge. Frontispiece color plate by Rackham: "How Arthur drew his sword Excalibur for the first time". Thick deckled leaves, near fine, bright. Bind fine, square; front hinge reinforced. Sharp near very good larger edition of this classic volume from the library of John Jacob Astor VI. Features sixteen tipped-in color plates in brilliant, subdued hues and seven in black & white by Arthur Rackham. Each color plate with fine tissue guards captioned in red. RACKHAM, ARTHUR, Illustrator. MALORY, THOMAS. THE ROMANCE OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. The MacMillan Company, New York, 1917.

Price: US$2860.00 + shipping

Description: 292 x 222 mm. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4"). xxiv, [iv], 517, [1] pp.Text abridged from Malory's "Morte d'Arthur" by Alfred Pollard. Original white kid stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, others trimmed on the rough (upper hinge expertly strengthened). In a new felt-lined slipcase. WITH 16 MOUNTED COLOR PLATES with lettered tissue guards and 70 drawings in black & white BY ARTHUR RACKHAM. Latimore & Haskell, p. 47. ◆Leather with a hint of soiling and very minor wear (corners slightly rubbed, a couple--perhaps naturally occurring--abrasions on the back cover), otherwise an especially fine copy. This is a lovely copy of the deluxe American edition on Large Paper of Arthur Rackham's take on the Arthurian legends. While Rackham did illustrations for a great many books, Houfe observes that he concentrated "particularly [on] those of a mystical, magic, or legendary background," like the present work. Rackham (1867-1939) studied art at Lambeth School, where the work of his fellow student Charles Ricketts influenced his development. Houfe tells us that soon after Rackham joined the staff of "The Westminster Budget" in 1892, he "established himself as one of the foremost Edwardian illustrators and was triumphant in the early 1900s when color printing first enabled him to use subtle tints and muted tones to represent age and timelessness." Being bound in white leather, the present item is very difficult to find as clean as it appears here. No. 180 OF 250 COPIES OF THE AMERICAN LARGE PAPER EDITION.

RACKHAM, Arthur (illus.); POLLARD, Alfred W.. The Romance of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Abridged from Malory's Morte D'Arthur.. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1917, 1917.

Price: US$2898.59 + shipping

Description: Signed limited edition, number 370 of 500 copies signed by the artist. The Romance of King Arthur was a wartime book, commissioned to reflect the nation's mood of patriotism and military endeavour. In preparing for the commission, Rackham turned to his own copy of Beardsley's Morte D'Arthur. Like Beardsley's illustrations, Rackham's designs have a stark black and white appearance, though Rackham "cannot resist the occasional wryly humorous touch such as a barking dog or a jester's head" (Hamilton pp. 111-112). A review of this edition in The Bookman (December 1917) stated that "the beauty and bizarre loveliness of the tales seem to have passed by some subtle alchemy into Mr Arthur Rackham's fanciful, whimsical, imaginative drawings in colour and black-and-white." and, in conclusion, "this is an ideal edition of a very characteristic old English classic". Latimore & Haskell, pp. 47-48; Riall, p. 130. James Hamilton, Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration, 1995. Quarto. Original parchment, spine and upper cover lettered and with pictorial decorations in gilt, top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece and 15 colour plates mounted on heavy white paper, with captioned tissue-guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Some uniform soiling to binding, head and foot of spine a little bumped, occasional foxing and browning, short tear to front free endpaper: a very good copy.
