Condition: Good

Description: 123pp. A first edition book written and illustrated by Cecil Aldin. Contains 11 colour plates tipped onto the pages and Cary's Survey of the High Roads form London on pp117-123, in colour. All these as called for. Numerous other drawings throughout also support the text. Some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the board corners, with slight fraying of the cloth. Light bump to the top corner of the front board with light turning in of the adjacnet page corner tips. Light soiling to both boards and a couple of small indentation marks to the rear board. Slight splitting to the rear inner hinge, though the rear board remain firmly attached. Also occasional gaps between pages in textblock though no gatherings or pages are loose and the textblock remains tight. Light foxing to the end papers, preliminary blank page, tail of the title page and to the margins of a several pages. Despite these faults, the book is otherwise clean and tight. A good copy.

The stage coach and its destinations and coaching inns held a special magic for the artist and this book is lavishly illustrated with his accomplished sketches and eleven full colour tissue guarded plates. Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin (28 April 1870 – 6 January 1935), was a British artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and sketches of animals, sports, and rural life. Aldin executed village scenes and rural buildings in chalk, pencil and also wash sketching. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and a Master of Fox Hounds, and many of his pictures illustrated hunting. Aldin's early influences included Randolph Caldecott and John Leech. This beautiful book traces two journeys, one by mail coach from London to Bath, and one in a stagecoach from London to Portsmouth.
