Bookplate to the front paste down of Volume I. Robert Southey (1774-1843) was an English Romantic poet and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. This is his epic poem, completed after he witnessed Napoleon's actions in Europe. It was originally entitled 'Pelayo, the Restorer of Spain', but was later retitled to change the emphasis in the story. The poem was critically acclaimed at the time and a very successful work. In half calf bindings. Externally sound, with shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the joints and extremities. Gilt remains bright to the spines. Pages are cockled with tidemarks, but are otherwise clean. Very Good
