Description: 8vo bound in brown cloth. First edition, first issue, with J.R. Osgood at tail of spine. Brown endpapers and pastedowns. Very Good with a lean to spine, mild rubbing to corners and head and tail of spine. Front pastedown has a small rectangle abrasion perhaps from the removal of a bookplate. Moderate soiling to rear endpaper and pastedown. Nonetheless, an attractive copy of a James rarity. 482 pp. [+4]

Boards have heavy splitting to rear joint exposing material under cloth, partial splitting to front joint, rubbing to corners exposing boards, fraying and tearing to spine edges, and moderate edge wear and shelf wear. Textblock has bookplate on front pastedown, light age toning, mild to moderate foxing to pages, damp staining to pages, splitting to rear interior hinge, and red stain on rear pastedown. Description: Third state of James' first novel with Houghton, Osgood & Co. at the tail of the spine, hardcover in clay red cloth over bevel edged boards, with gilt stamped titling and decoration to the spine, and blind stamped borders to the covers. The hinges appear to have been neatly repaired, and the binding is at a lean with a couple of light cracks internally. The book also has bumps with some fraying and loss to the cloth at the spine ends and cover corners, small areas of mottling and soiling to the cloth, sunning to the spine and head, slight shelfwear to the edges, and previous owners' names to the front end pages with brief bookseller marks to the rear paste down. Otherwise, this is a solid, Good only copy in a protective, slightly rubbed Mylar, and housed in a custom made slipcase, which has some slight wear to the extremities, and mild fading to the edges.
