Signed by the author, John Masefield, on the front free endpaper. Slight discoloration to this page along the left edge from glue. John Masefield was the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967. Binding strong and tight. Light foxing to top, but pages are clean.

Below the inscription is an ink drawing by Masefield of two horses racing over a fence with an original manuscript couplet as the caption, "He Rushed through its top/Like a comet in heaven that nothing/can stop." 8vo., original cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper board, gilt on spine a little dulled, otherwise a very good copy preserved in cloth chemise and blue morocco backed slipcase lettered in gilt. Withe the bookplate of Henry Lewis Batterman Jr designed by Rockwell Kent. Masefield's spirited narrative poem is based around the fictional English Chasers Cup, a race with obvious parallels to the Grand National. It is run over four and a half miles featuring formidable fences. The unfancied eponymous chaser wins the day against the odds.
