There is a frontis portrait by Augustus John which has a tissue guard. The Arab Revolt of 1916-1918, when the disparate tribes of Arabia rose up as one great force to defeat an empire, was one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Middle East and a pivotal element of the Middle Eastern arena of World War I. It sounded the death knell for the Ottoman Empire and paved the way for a new colonial power in the region - the British. It was T.E. Lawrence, a young army officer with a brilliant military mind and unmatched knowledge of the region and the Arab people, who - alongside the charismatic Faisal I - led the Revolt. These were epic events that changed the shape of the Middle East and affected Lawrence for the rest of his life. His magnificent first-hand account of the period is now a classic of 20th century literature. Revolt in the Desert, the abridged and far more accessible edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, became an instant bestseller when it was first published in 1927. Ref Z 6

Description: With 16 full plate illustrations (including frontispiece) and folding map at rear. Laid in is a 2-page summary -*-of Travels in Arabia Deserta by Charles M. Doughty with testimonials and an order form, plus a small 4-page publisher's insert (125 x 85 mm.) Advertising the same book plus others on the last leaf. Publisher's cloth, had and tail of spine worn, crease on the top board; hinges starting, otherwise a lovely uncut and partially unopened copy. First edition. Written as the abridged version of Seven pillars, this text recounts the highlights of Lawrence's experiences in the British Intelligence Forces during the Arab Revolt of 1916-18. Famously, Lawrence lost his briefcase containing the original manuscript for Seven pillars of wisdom and had to rewrite it from memory. A thrilling tale of intrigue and war, Lawrence's detailed prose carries one on an epic tale through war-torn desert landscapes, introducing the reader to a colorful cast of characters along the way. Lawrence (1888-1935), also known as Lawrence of Arabia, is one of the most famous figures in English history. A British intelligence and RAF officer, Lawrence "was awarded the DSO for his masterful direction and command of Arab forces in an encounter at Tafilah" in 1918 and invited by Winston Churchill "to join the new Middle East department." Despite being born to an illegitimate union, Lawrence grew up in a comfortable and pious home, where he nurtured his scholastic inclinations. While studying history at Jesus College in Oxford he developed an interest in medieval warfare and archaeology. This led him to excavations in Syria for the British Museum, which wetted his interest in the Arabic culture, and paved the way for his famous diplomatic and military exploits in the Middle East. Lawrence was also an author "deeply concerned with posterity" and actively promoted his war-hero reputation during his lifetime. While some of the more fantastical moments in his stories are known to be exaggerated, they nonetheless make for an exciting read. Â.

T. E. Lawrence. Revolt in the Desert, the publisher's limited issue of the first edition, number 161 of 315 The first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in Lawrence's lifetime. Jonathan Cape Ltd., London, 1927.

Price: US$1950.00 + shipping

Description: This is the English first, limited, and numbered edition of Revolt in the Desert - the first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in Lawrence’s lifetime. This limited edition was distinctly different from its English trade edition counterpart. The binding is larger and features quarter brown pigskin spine over brown buckram boards with a gilt rule transition. The extensively illustrated contents feature generous margins, untrimmed fore and bottom edges, gilt top edges, and green and yellow head and tail bands. The edition was limited to 315 copies. The large size of the volume was dictated by inclusion of colored plates from the 1926 Subscribers’ edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. As a result, the text differs from the trade issue; "In order to justify the inclusion of some of the persons represented in the plates and otherwise mentioned in the text, a few extra paragraphs were added to the abridged text." (O'Brien, A101, p.79)This copy is all the more scarce due to presence of the original dust jacket, the rear panel of which advertises Travels in Arabia Deserta by Charles M. Doughty with Introduction by T. E. Lawrence. This is a sound and complete copy, but with exterior wear and defects. Hence we grade this copy conservatively as only "good" and the jacket as "poor". We price this copy accordingly. The leather is unfaded and the spine gilt bright, but wear is readily apparent and there is brown leather reinforcement beneath the original binding at the spine head. The buckram boards are respectably clean with only light shelf wear, but the lower front cover cloth is mildly blistered. The contents are the book’s best feature, clean and complete, with all illustrations present, the rear folding map intact, no previous ownership marks, and only a trivial hint of spotting, primarily confined to the untrimmed page edges. The limitation page is hand-numbered "161". The original dust jacket, distinctively printed "Limited Edition" on the front face, is noteworthy only for surviving. The jacket shows considerable wear, spine toning, overall soiling, and various losses, including to the upper edges, a large irregular strip spanning the spine head, a smaller irregular strip at the spine heel, a loss to the lower spine above the publisher’s name, and a loss at the lower fore edge of the front face. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. The story is that of T. E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." He spent the rest of his famously short life struggling to variously reconcile, reject, recount, and repress this indelible experience. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his magnum opus for the general public during his lifetime. The history of the publication of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and its many versions - including Revolt in the Desert - is almost as complicated and interesting as the author himself. After years, multiple drafts, and brutal rounds of editing and reduction, in 1926, a "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made. To pay his debts, he finally consented to publication of this abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which he undertook to do himself. Taking a set of proofs of the Subscriber’s Edition, Lawrence swiftly marked out whole chapters and large portions of others. "Chapters 1-7 were dropped completely, and of 652 pages 211 were omitted entirely Once his debt had been cleared, he ordered that no more copies were to be printed." (O’Brien, pp.77-78) Revolt in the Desert was the only version of his work published for the general public during Lawrence’s lifetime. Reference: O’Brien A101 Numbered and limited iss

One of 315 numbered large paper copies (300 for sale). O'Brien A101. *Lawrence had spared no expense in publication of the 1926 subscribers' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. To recoup some of the costs he agreed to the publication of an abridged version of the book, retitled Revolt In the Desert. Chapters 1-7 were dropped completely, and other text was cut. Lawrence reserved the right to stop publication at any time, and once his debt had been cleared, he ordered that no more copies were to be printed. The trade edition contained 16 black & white plates. The large paper edition included 3 extra plates and a little additional text: 'Size of volume dictated by inclusion of coloured plates from 1926 Seven Pillars. In order to justify the inclusion of some of the persons represented in the plates and not otherwise mentioned in the text, a few paragraphs were added to the abridged text' [O'Brien p. 79].

Description: First Australian Edition. This book is not listed in any of Philip M. OÕBrienÕs three bibliographies of T.E. Lawrence. Australian publisher, George J. Hicks, made a deal with American publisher, Doubleday Doran, to release Revolt In the Desert in Australia. Using bound books of the second American printing which were shipped to Melbourne, Hicks created his own dust jacket and issued the book. The front panel of the jacket has the title, LawrenceÕs name, the classic Augustus John drawing of Lawrence in Arab garb, with George J. Hicks & Co. printed along the bottom edge. The back panel describes the book (using the text printed on the rear panel of the dust jacket of the first American edition, and beneath which is reference to the volume as the ÒAustralasian Edition 15/- NetÓ. Underneath is printed Hicks publishing information noting offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Wellington, N.Z.Ó The printed flaps of the dust jacket are most curious. The front flap has the printed text that is found on the front flap of the British first edition as published by Jonathan Cape. The rear flap contains the text of the front flap of the first American edition as published initially by George H. Doran. 16 plates and the map. Some slight mottling to the title page else a very good plus to near fine copy in a very good plus to near fine dust jacket with a tiny bit of dust soiling and a few very tiny nicks and tiny tears. Revolt in the Desert was an instant bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, and "[w]ithin weeks of publication the combined royalties from Revolt were more than sufficient to pay off the Seven Pillars overdraft. Lawrence's Trustees therefore invoked a special clause inserted in the contract with Cape to protect his privacy, and halted publication in England. Revolt continued to sell well, however, both in the United States and in translation" (Wilson [1988], pp. 180). Lawrence was characteristically of two minds about the book: dismissive of the text, which he viewed as an embarrassment to himself, and yet attentive to the critical response. LAWRENCE, T. E.. Revolt in the Desert.. London: Jonathan Cape, 1927, 1927.

Price: US$2881.94 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, limited issue, number 51 of 315 copies in quarto with 10 colour plates which were printed in monochrome in the standard octavo issue. This hugely successful abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1926) was vital in defraying the soaring production costs of Lawrence's masterpiece and in establishing the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. It was Bernard Shaw who suggested to Lawrence that he fundraise for the £13,000 debt incurred from producing the limited "Cranwell" edition of Seven Pillars by writing an abridged version for a wider readership. Intent on not making an "excessive" profit from the idea, Lawrence ordered that no more copies be printed once his costs had been cleared. As a result, the fifth impression was the last, by which time 90,000 copies were in circulation, with many more still in demand. The public next encountered Lawrence's narrative in 1935, with the release of the first trade edition of the complete Seven Pillars. "Lawrence felt that in Seven Pillars he had failed to create a work of the 'titanic' class: his aim in the abridgement was more modest and therefore more attainable. There was magnificent material in Seven Pillars for an uncomplicated adventure story, and Lawrence was determined to succeed" (Wilson, p. 768). O'Brien A101. Jeremy Wilson, Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography of T. E. Lawrence, 1989. Quarto (249 x 186 mm). Recent red morocco, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, twin gilt fillet with star corners bordering covers, top edge gilt. Colour portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, 10 colour plates, 8 monochrome plates, and folding map at rear. Title page printed in red and black. Recent bookseller's ticket on front pastedown. An excellent copy.

LAWRENCE, T.E.. Revolt in the desert. Jonathan Cape 30 Bedford Square, London, 1927.

Price: US$3202.16 + shipping

Description: [2], 445pp, [1]. With half-title/limitation, coloured frontispiece portrait of Lawrence, eighteen further illustrations, nine of which are coloured, and a large folding map to rear. Original publisher's brown quarter-pigskin over sand-coloured buckram boards, gilt. Dustwrapper. T.E.G., others uncut. A remarkably preserved copy, with only the slightest of shelf-wear externally, bookplate (a skull with the initials PMF) and slight marking to FEP, else fine. Dustwrapper (correctly displaying 'Limited Edition' to spine and upper board panels) with some loss and tearing, tape removal marks to verso, inner flaps trimmed at both corners. In an effort to recoup some of the costs of the production of the 1926 edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, British army officer, diplomat and man of letters T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) first contemplated selling his library at Pole Hill, Chingford, before settling on the publication of an abridgement of Seven Pillars entitled Revolt in the Desert. This effort, undertaken by the author himself, saw the first seven chapters dropped entirely; reducing the size of the text by around a third. However, suggestions that Lawrence refused to countenance publication of any more copies than were necessary to clear the debts owing from the production of the larger Seven Pillars suggests he was not altogether happy with the reduction. This First English edition, limited in number to 300 copies, was nevertheless a lavish production, finely printed on large paper dictated by the inclusion of the 10 beautiful colour plates from the 1926 subscriber's edition of Seven Pillars, depicting Lawrence, Storrs, Tafas el Hazimi, Emir Shakir and Jaafar Pasha amongst others, was published at the high price of five guineas. Neither the price of this edition, nor the abridgement, appeared to have harmed the appeal of this large paper limited edition or the trade edition published a few days later: both sold out almost instantly, only further cementing the fame of the retiring 'Lawrence of Arabia'. This is only the second copy in a dustwrapper that we have encountered during our 13 years of trading; the majority were presumably discarded to reveal the more lavish pigskin-backed binding. O'Brien A101. Size: Quarto First English edition (Limited edition, no. 63/300).
