LAWRENCE, T.E.. Revolt in the Desert. New York George H. Doran Company 1927, 1927.

Price: US$513.57 + shipping

Description: Second American ('Gift') edition. Revolt in the Desert was an abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which was undertaken by Lawrence to defray some of the significant expenses incurred by the lavish and painstaking production of the 'Subscriber's' or 'Cranwell' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, that had escalated from an initial estimate of £3,000 to some £13,000. The abridgement 'was undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen. Octavo (238 x 159mm), pp. xvi, [4 (foreword, verso blank, fly-title, verso blank)], 335, [1 (blank)]. Frontispiece after Augustus John, 22 plates after Eric Kennington, Augustus John, William Roberts, et al., one folding, and one folding map printed in red and black. Illustrations in the text. (A few light spots and small marks, folding map slightly creased.) Original brown buckram, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edges brown, others uncut, a few ll. unopened, endpapers with designs after Eric Kennington. (A few light marks, extremities lightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped.) A very good copy in the original cloth. Provenance: Jeremy Michael Wilson (1944-2017, booklabel on front free endpaper). The first American edition of Revolt in the Desert was published on 29 March 1927 at a price of $3 and was followed several months later by this second American edition, also known as the 'Gift Edition', which was '[b]y far the best-looking of all the American impressions' (O'Brien, p. 78) and was issued for the Christmas season at the higher price of $5. The 'Gift Edition' is notable for its illustrations, since it includes '18 [monochrome] line cuts in the text from 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom not present in any other edition of Revolt. [.] It contains Kennington endpapers and some line cuts in the text found elsewhere only in the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom' (O'Brien). Curiously, in this edition the frontispiece portrait after Augustus John is reversed on the vertical axis so that Lawrence faces towards the title-page. This copy was previously in the collection of the distinguished Lawrence scholar Jeremy Wilson, the author of the National Portrait Gallery catalogue T.E. Lawrence: Lawrence of Arabia (London, 1988). Wilson was also the editor of T.E. Lawrence's Minorities (London, 1971) and the author of Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography of T.E. Lawrence (London, 1989), and the co-founder, with his wife Nicole, of the Castle Hill Press. The Castle Hill Press' first publication was Seven Pillars of Wisdom. A Triumph. The Complete 1922 Text. Edited by Jeremy Wilson (Fordingbridge, 1997), which was the first publication of the text of the 'Oxford Edition', and this was followed by further editions of the 1922 text as well as a parallel text edition of the 1922 and 1926 texts, and further scholarly editions of works by Lawrence.

T. E. Lawrence. Revolt in the Desert. George H. Doran, New York, 1927.

Price: US$550.00 + shipping

Description: Revolt in the Desert is the only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in Lawrence’s lifetime. This is the second American edition – the so-called "Gift Edition" issued for the 1927 Christmas season. Although it resembles the English first edition in dust jacket, binding, and format, illustrations render this second American edition unique. The text contains 18 black and white line cuts from the famous 1926 Subscriber’s edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom found in no other edition of Revolt in the Desert, and striking Kennington endpapers are also exclusive to this edition. Condition approaches near fine in a good plus dust jacket. The brown buckram binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt and only trivial shelf wear to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All illustrations are intact, as are the Kennington endpapers and the folding map following the text. The brown-stained top edges retain uniform, unfaded color and the untrimmed fore and bottom edges are notably clean, showing only a hint of age-toning. The dust jacket is nearly complete, with only trivial loss at the upper hinges and corners, two tiny abrasion holes at the lower hinges, and a neatly price-clipped upper front flap. Nonetheless we grade the jacket as only "good plus" owing to significant spine toning which has rendered the red title print no longer legible and moderate overall soiling. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. The story is that of T. E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his magnum opus for the general public during his lifetime. The history of the publication of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and its many versions - including Revolt in the Desert - is almost as complicated and interesting as the author himself. Lawrence nearly completed a massive first draft of Seven Pillars of Wisdom in 1919, only to famously lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000-word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000-word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. He contemplated selling his library then perhaps some of his property at Pole Hill, Chingford. His reluctant solution to alleviate the financial pressure was Revolt in the Desert. He finally settled on authorizing publication of this abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which he undertook to do himself. Taking a set of proofs of the Subscriber’s Edition, Lawrence swiftly marked out whole chapters and large portions of others. "Chapters 1-7 were dropped completely, and of 652 pages 211 were omitted entirely Once his debt had been cleared, he ordered that no more copies were to be printed." (O’Brien, pp.77-78) Revolt in the Desert was to be the only version of his work published for the general public during Lawrence’s lifetime. Reference: O’Brien A108

Price: US$600.00 + shipping

Description: Revolt in the Desert was the first and only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for general availability to the public in T.E. Lawrence’s lifetime. This is copy 171 of 250 of the publisher's limited issue of the first U.S. edition, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. This is a large, handsome book. The volume measures 10.625 x 8.125 inches (30 x 20.6 cm), bound in heavy blue buckram with a brown leather spine label, gilt top edge, blue and yellow head and tail bands, and blue endpapers. The contents are printed on large laid paper sheets with generous margins and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The edition is profusely illustrated with 18 plates, 10 in color, the full-page color plates each preceded by a tissue guard printed with caption, the black and white plates each tipped onto grey paper. This is a good plus copy. The blue buckram binding is square and tight with sharp corners, though with minor blemishes to the rear cover, modest spine toning, and some wear to the leather spine label, including partial loss of the "SE" in "DESERT". The contents are clean and complete with no previous owner names and no appreciable spotting. Age toning shows at the untrimmed fore and bottom edges and the top edge gilt is a little dulled and dusty. T. E. Lawrence. Revolt in the Desert, the publisher's limited issue of the first edition, number 101 of 250 An unread copy with the original dust jacket and slipcase. George H. Doran, New York, 1927.

Price: US$1350.00 + shipping

Description: Revolt in the Desert was the first and only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for general availability to the public in T.E. Lawrence’s lifetime. This is copy 101 of 250 of the publisher's limited issue of the first U.S. edition, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. This is a better than near-fine, unread copy accompanied by the flawed and worn original dust jacket and slipcase. This is a large, handsome book. The volume measures 10.625 x 8.125 inches (30 x 20.6 cm), bound in heavy blue buckram with a brown leather spine label, gilt top edge, blue and yellow head and tail bands, and blue endpapers. The contents are printed on large sheets of laid paper with generous margins and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The edition is profusely illustrated with 18 plates, 10 in color, the full-page color plates each preceded by a tissue guard printed with caption, the black and white plates each tipped onto grey paper. It was originally issued in a dust jacket printed in black on ivory stock and housed in an unadorned blue-gray paper-covered cardboard slipcase. This copy #101 is a magnificent example. The blue buckram binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with almost no wear. The leather spine label is bright and intact. We note only a barely discernible hint of dulling to the lower spine a tiny bump to the lower front corner. The contents are immaculate, crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The top edge gilt is uniformly bright. All illustrations are intact, including the striking frontispiece by Eric Kennington, as are all caption-printed tissue guards and the folding map following the index. Of special note are uncut signatures throughout; this book is unquestionably unread. The publisher’s original jacket and slipcase have done their job protecting the book beneath and borne the brunt of wear and exposure in the process. The jacket shows considerable loss to the spine, with smaller loss to the top edge and lower front corner of the front face. The dust jacket is now protected beneath a removable, archival clear cover. The original slipcase is present, though dulled, worn, and lacking the bottom panel. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T. E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." To recover the loss, in 1927 Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled Revolt in the Desert. This first edition had both a regular trade issue and this limited issue, of which we here offer #101 of just 250 copies. By contrast, there were 750 copies of the publisher’s limited issue of the first edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, published eight years later in 1935.
