Description: Large 4to, half leather, five raised bands, gilt titles to spine, marbled edges and endpapers (chipped front edge); featuring 12 handsome full-page colour plates of native birds by Robert Ridgway and 9 full-page b&w engravings of fishes. This report, the third of five reports comprising the Arctic Series, is in four sections which, partly as a personal narrative and partly a scientific tract, describe the birds, mammals, fishes, and insects of Alaska. Nelsons health, compromised by the rigours of the expedition into difficult country, prevented him from completing the report, and the responsibility of concluding the work passed to Henshaw. Found in a distraught state, the book has been expertly repaired and restored. An entirely presentable copy.
