Description: Original black cloth, shows wear. Ex-library copy with two stamps on title page. "Withdrawn Smithsonian Institution Libraries." "Bureau of American Ethnology Library 6679". No other library markings. 121 pages followed by 20 numbered fold-out maps of Alaska. Map No. 1 has been archivally repaired at folds. Text block very clean and binding tight. The expedition through the Yukon was authorized for the purpose of assessing the indigenous populations from a military perspective. Alaska became part of the US with "Seward's Folly" purchase of the land from Russia in 1867. It became a "district" of the US in 1884, then a territory, and ultimately was proclaimed a state in 1959.

This report is of his mission to reconnoiter the Yukon River. He led his men over the Chilkoot Pass, built rafts and floated down the Yukon to the Bering Sea (the longest raft journey ever made (cf. Martin Sandler, Ghost Ship, New York: Sterling Publishing Co. (2006), pp 2478-48). Very Good binding.

CONDITION: Good ex-library, worn cover, spine sunned, slightly cocked, library marks throughout, some maps with light tears at edges and separations at folds. Report on a United States military and geographical expedition through Alaska, traversing the Inland Passage, Chilkat Country, mountains and glaciers. Expedition members built a raft for travel on the lakes and then the rapids of Yukon River, ending 1303 miles later in the Aleutian Islands. Lieutenant Schwatka was chosen to command this expedition to survey Alaska and report on the native population after participating in the 1878 American Geographical Society search for lost Northwest Passage explorer Sir John Franklin.
