Description: [House of Representatives, Ex. Doc. No. 44]. Washington, thick quarto, [iv], 695 p., 21 full-page plates, including 3 colored lithographs, 10 photographic plates, and a folding map, plus numerous illustrations in the text. ***CONTENT: Lasting twenty-seven months from 1881 to 1883, this War Department expedition was commanded by Lieut. Patrick Henry Ray of the U.S. Signal Corps. The expedition's purpose was to establish a station at Point Barrow, the northernmost point of Alaska, for meteorological, magnetic, oceanic, astronomical, and other scientific observations. The volume includes precise data tables and graphs as well as natural history and ethnographic observations. A chapter by Ray provides a description of the indigenous peoples of the region, with details on their culture, language, tools and weapons, and more. Expedition members collected mammals, birds, fishes, insects, marine invertebrates, mollusks, plants, and mineral specimens. Notable contributors to the volume include malacologist W.H. Dall and botanist Asa Gray. The photographs of icy arctic landscapes, "eskimos" and encampments are striking, as are the handsome colored engravings of birds and the base station (frontispiece). ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG+ copy in the original brown calf covers, with a 20th c. gilt-decorated backstrip with four raised bands and red calf title labels. The covers are clean and sound, albeit with some scuffing and discoloration; backstrip near pristine. Recent endpapers. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. The text pages and illustrations (most with tissue guards) are very fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing, yellowing or stains. No evidence of previous ownership. This is an attractive copy of an important monograph. BMNH 1654, 2165. International shipping will be extra for this volume, but only at my cost.
