This edition on small paper is limited to 350 copies for England and 150 copies for America. This copy is number 34 of the English Edition. Bound in original publisher's original slate blue paper covered boards with a white vellum spine and a faded red title. Printed by the Chiswick Press on handmade watermarked paper with the fore edges uncut. Cover is a little dusty, corners a little bumped, rubbed and worn, spine discoloured and ends rubbed, title label chipped, pencil inscription about the book on verso of front board, discolouration on page 3 due to an acidic sheet stored between pages, else text very clean otherwise a very good copy. Size 19.5 x 15cm [8 x 5.75 inches]

Description: Limited edition, number six of twenty-five copies printed for sale in England on Japanese Vellum. Signed by Walter Crane. 8vo. pp. xiii, 162, [5]. Loose gatherings, unbound in a slipcase of blue card with parchment spine gilt stamped with title, author and date. Thirty-nine illustrations by Crane engraved by Arthur Leverett, Emery Walker and W. Boutall. The gatherings are in fine condition. The slip case shows some markings and tears and has been repaired in places. Overall, this is a very good example of a scarce edition. There are several limited editions of this work published by Elkin Mathews but this is generally reckoned to be the finest and most rare. As a contemporary reviewer wrote, "The little volume does both author and publisher credit for the tasteful style in which it is produced".
