This limited first edition of Recapitulation was privately printed exclusively for Members of The First Edition Society. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Bruce Mason returns to Salt Lake City not for his aunt's funeral, but to encounter after forty-five years the place he fled in bitterness. A successful statesman and diplomat, Mason had buried his awkward and lonely childhood, sealed himself off from the thrills and torments of adolescence to become a figure who commanded international respect. But the realities of the present recede in the face of the ghosts of his past. As he makes the perfunctory arrangements for the funeral, we enter with him on an intensely personal and painful inner pilgrimage: we meet the father who darkened his childhood, the mother whose support was both redeeming and embarrassing, the friend who drew him into the respectable world of which he so craved to be a part, and the woman he nearly married. In this profoundly moving book Stegner has drawn an intimate portrait of a man understanding how his life has been shaped by experiences seemingly remote and inconsequential.(Publisher).

Description: This offering is a Deluxe, Limited Edition Franklin Library publication of Recapitulation written by Wallace Stegner and illustrated by Walter Rane. It's deluxe in that it has the "built in" bookmark, gold-gilded page edges, satin-like end pages, and leather-bound boards with a ribbed spine and gold-gilded lettering decorating both the front and back boards and forming the print on the spine. It IS a book in Franklin Mint's The First Edition Society which means that it has also been signed (perhaps laser-printed) and includes a laid-in eight page "Notes from the Editors" pamphlet describing the work. The book was published by The Franklin Library in 1979 and is a stated "limited first edition published by special arrangement with" Doubleday and Company, Inc. Usually the books in this series by Franklin Library were published a bit before the trade editions so, in reality, the books in The First Edition Society are the true firsts. This copy is in fine condition and has not been read. To my knowledge, the only time it's been opened has been when I opened it to glean the information that I've included in this blurb. What an absolutely beautiful gift . . . for yourself or a loved one! Thank you for looking!

Description: Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1979. First Edition, and limited. Includes separate eight-fold "Notes From the Editors". Book and the separate pamphlet are illustrated by Walter Rane. See scans. As New; pristine. Never read nor handled, except to scan. Octavo, 335 pp. (334 numbered). Franklin's lavish leather binding of the true first edition of Wallace Stegner's "Recapitulation", the second of his semi-autobiographical novels, offered here forty years later as the protagonist's return to.The Big Rock Candy Mountain. Full rich russet-red leather, elaborately tooled in decorative gilt on covers and spine, spine panels rib divided, All Edges Gilt, russet silk moire endpapers with matching satin page-marker ribbon. The Franklin Library, doing what they did best. Immaculately preserved. With the author's "A Special Message to the First Edition Society" prefacing the novel; note that this message does bear, at its end, Stegner's facsimile signature - which looks actual enough (see scan), but is reproduced; this Franklin first edition issue is not a signed edition. Yes, you can physically read these very sturdy Franklin editions, but their rather spectacular "curb appeal" makes them just fine for display, as well. This example is immaculately preserved. Please review scans. L-franklin1
