Medium green lettering on front cover and spine. 5" x 7 1/2." 327 pages, complete. Former owner's name printed on a piece of paper tipped in on front pastedown: "Jerome A. Blanchard." Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, the small occasional mark, and the former owner's bookplate. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for minuscule bumping to corners and head and tail of spine. Binding is tight. A Fine copy. Printed by the Riverside Press of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was an American author, educator, social activist, and composer. Wiggin founded the first free kindergarten of San Francisco in 1878, the Silver Street Free Kindergarten. She devoted the rest of her life to the welfare of children and also helped establish over sixty kindergartens in San Francisco and Oakland with her sister, Nora Smith. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903) is a children's novel and coming-of-age story about Rebecca Rowena Randall. Due to her family's financial hardships, Rebecca is sent to live with her two aunts, Miranda and Jane Sawyer, in the fictional town of Riverboro, Maine. Miranda is strict and disapproving, but Jane takes Rebecca under her wing and teaches her how to sew and cook and other household skills. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was adapted into a Broadway play in 1909 and adapted three times for film in 1917, 1932, and 1938.

Bound in the publisher's green cloth with green lettering, and green and orange floral decorations, to the spine; green lettering and borders, with two framed scenes -- stamped in green, red, gray, blue, and white -- on the front board. A small slip of paper with a gift inscription (in old fountain pen) is glue-tacked to the first fep. This could easily be removed but I feel it adds character and personality to the book. Clean and bright with slight cocking to the spine. There is very minor edge wear to the top and bottom of the spine, while the corners and edges are clean. Bagged for posterity. Sunnybrook Farm was a quick success, with more than 7 printings between October and Dec of 1903. This copy has a 5 line quote from the book written out in Wiggin's own hand on the front endpaper, and signed by her beneath. No date on the signature - but her hand is distinctive and this is a nice clear example of her signature.

Basis for the 1939 movie, starring Shirley Temple, Jack Haley and Randolph Scott. Signed inscription by Wiggin on the front endpaper: "Yours faithfully, Kate Douglas Wiggin." Very Good (bright, minor rubbing, faint dampstain lower spine area). Enclosed in a custom-designed, leather and cloth clam-shell box, with a colorful floral image on the spine and a bucolic house scene- mostly in leather onlays- on the front cover.
