Description: Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is a classic American 1903 children's novel by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The irrepressible 10-year-old Rebecca Rowena Randall burst into the world of children's book characters (and her new life in Maine) in 1903 when storybook girls were gentle and proper. Rebecca Rowena Randall goes to live with her two stern aunts in the village of Riverboro in Maine. A "bird of a very different feather," she had "a small, plain face illuminated by a pair of eyes carrying such messages, such suggestions, such hints of sleeping power and insight, that one never tired of looking into their shining depths. " Soon enough, she wins over her prim Aunt Miranda, the whole town, and thousands of readers everywhere with her energetic, indomitable spirit. Rebecca Rowena Randall was such an appealing fictional character that she was portrayed by Mary Pickford in the 1917 Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm movie, then by Shirley Temple in the 1937 version. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856¿1923) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably this classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor and the notion and experience of "childhood" was mostly non-existent. This copy has stated traits of a first edition. In particular: p325 "Don't turn in at the side"; p327 ".in the October Sun"; the publisher's name printed with letters 0.125" high on spine; the front cover has an illustration pasted down and the copyright page states published October, 1902, but no date published is stated on title page. Issued without dust jacket. Copy has no illustrations. Hardcover has green cloth boards embossed with illustration pasted to front cover, lettering & designs in hunter green with orange flowers on spine, but no DJ. Interior has torn front gutter with weak rear gutter, but binding complete with no loose pages. POS on ffep (adds no value), pages foxing with handling smudges, damp stain on lower page edges but no markings within text. Copyright 1903, stated published October, 1902. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. No advertising in book.
