Price: US$194.93 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First published in August 1938, this is an eighteenth impression (Cheap Edition, price unchanged in spite of war) of November 1940, a huge tribute to the book's popularity. Some edge wear and small loss to top and bottom of unfaded classic Gollancz yellow jacket and spine, corners of spine rubbed with small loss, front corners slightly bruised, some dust staining to page fore edges, some very slight fingerprint wear, not price clipped (price on front cover (3/6), previous owner's name and date (Christmas 1941), on ffep and front pastedown, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 446pp. The second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the terrible events that occurred as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she scarcely knew. For there were phantoms of a time gone but not forgotten in every part of the vast house, a past devotedly preserved by Mrs. Danvers, the malevolent housekeeper. A suite pristine and unspoiled, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current residents. The second Mrs de Winter travelled in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, intent on uncovering the deepest secrets and shattering the most terrifying illusions. Daphne du Maurier's classic novel, scarce in this early impression.
