Stevenson, Robert Louis (1850 - 1894). The Master of Ballantrae, a Winter's Tale, by Robert Louis Stevenson, Published 1899 by Rand McNally, Beautiful Ornate Binding Early U. S. Edition, Exceptionally Well - Preserved. Rand, McNally & Company, 1899.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: This is an early American edition of "The Master of Ballantrae" by the great Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson. It was published in 1899 by Rand McNally in its "Antique Library" series, and bound in a very handsome ribbed silk cloth binding , ornately embellished in embossed gilt and black. In an old advertisement, Rand, McNally described this binding thusly: "This series comprises titles carefully selected from the standard works of the world's greatest authors, suitable for any library and attractive to readers of the most refined tastes. The books are well printed on extra laid paper, trimmed edge, equal to and indistinguishable from the best hand-made, and are bound in olive silk ribbed cloth, with richly ornamental and artistic gold and embossed side and back stamp, and gold topped." ******************************* Stevenson's story is exciting, relating a deadly feud that arose between two brothers of the nobility, during the Jacobite uprising in Scotland. It all came about when Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the Stuart Banner - splitting the sympathies of the Scots. It's an international adventure, starting in Scotland, and thence spreading to France, India, Canada, North Carolina, and New York State. There is much action, including Pirates, treachery, and buried treasure. No one could tell a good, gripping story like Robert Louis Stevenson! ******************************** SERIES : The Antique Library. TITLE : The Master of Ballantrae - A Winter's Tale. AUTHOR : Robert Louis Stevenson(1850 - 1894). IMPRINT : Rand, McNally & Company. PLACE : Chicago and New York. DATE : No Date [ But 1899 . from bibliographical sources]. EDITION : Reprint . Early American Edition. SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Exceptionally well-preserved ornate binding. Rear board blank. Top edge gilt. ****************************** CONDITION - NEAR FINE - This 119 year old book is previously owned , but in exceptionally well-preserved condition, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Compression and a touch of abrasion to the spine extremities; there are a few barely perceptible minute spots on the front board (these are more easily seen in our frontal view picture, than when viewed in actuality) - else the boards are clean and bright with strong color and with the gilt lettering and embellishment still bright; top edge gilt somewhat rubbed but still fairly bright; text-block fore- and bottom-edges toned, else clean. Exterior presents beautifully. BINDING - The binding is not as tight as when issued, but no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole remains solid. INTERIOR - There is an inked signature with date written on the front free end-paper ("W. C. Kimball / Jan'y 1901) - else the interior is clean and free of marking - quite presentable.

[Arizona]. SALT RIVER VALLEY ITS ATTRACTIONS FOR THE CAPITALIST THE INVALID THE IMMIGRANT [wrapper title]. Cunningham, Curtiss & Welch, San Francisco, 1899.

Price: US$875.00 + shipping

Description: 16pp. of text (including wrapper title) printed on one side of a large folding sheet, 16 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches, with printed map on the verso, surrounded by five illustrations from photographs. Lightly tanned. A tiny bit of separation at folds. Near fine. A rare promotional for the Salt River Valley region in southern Arizona, featuring a large map of the area. Issued by the Maricopa County Board of Trade, the pamphlet announces that land is available in a valley of 500,000 acres, "The most perfect climate! The most perfect soil! The most varied productions." The map shows the large Salt River Valley region with Phoenix at its center, and also including the nearby communities of Tempe, Glendale, and Mesa. The paths of the Salt, Gila, Agua Fria, and Verde rivers (as well as smaller tributaries) are traced in blue, assuring prospective settlers that water is readily available nearby. Five illustrations from photographs surround the map showing land and the Arizona state capitol building, and a table provides climatological data. The text on the verso of the sheet offers enticing descriptions, with much on the availability of water - especially for irrigation - the opportunities for cultivation of a variety of crops, the healthful aspects of the region, as well as giving a brief description of native peoples and growing cities. A similarly-titled and formatted work was published around the same time by the Maricopa County Immigration Union and printed by Rand McNally in Chicago. However, OCLC locates only a single copy of the present promotional, printed in San Francisco by Cunningham, Curtiss & Welch, at the Denver Public Library. OCLC 36244585.
