Mrs. Palmer Potter, et al. RAND McNALLY & CO.S A WEEK AT THE FAIR. Rand McNally, 1893.

Price: US$45.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: This 268 pp. book is subtitled, "Illustrating the Exhibits and Wonders of the World's Columbian Exposition With Special Descriptive Articles By .". This massive World's Fair was named for the fact that it commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus discovering America. The book has numerous steel engravings throughout, and includes a beautiful detailed fold-out map (tipped-in) of the Fair grounds -- in excellent shape. There is a prior owner's name atop the first page, AND from page 157 on back, the one top outer corner of every page has been worn , with the latter pages having that corner quite rounded off, for no reason I can possibly imagine. That is peculiar, but it in no way affects any text or photos, as the pages are otherwise pristine. The bendable red LEATHER binding is quite attractive. Priced down accordingly for those corners, but the book is otherwise in VERY GOOD ++ condition.

The map covers the entire region from Victoria Island to Lake Erie and from the Pacific Ocean and Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) to Newfoundland. Manitoba at the time was much smaller that its current size. On 15 July 1870, Manitoba officially became a Canadian province. It then measured about 130 miles east to west and 110 miles north to south, with an area of 13,928 square miles. Its size and shape gave it the nickname "the Postage Stamp Province". and the square size was 1/18 of its current size. The Manitoba boundaries were later expanded in 1881 and 1912. The terms British America and British North America continued to be used for Britain's remaining territories in North America, but the term British North America came to be used more consistently in connection with the provinces that would eventually form the Dominion of Canada, following the Report on the Affairs of British North America (1839), called the Durham ReportRand, McNally and Co. Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Description: "Go everywhere and see everything at the Columbian Exposition with this detailed map of the city and fairgrounds, published in 1893 by Rand McNally. One side presents Chicago between River North and Jackson Park, the site of the World's Fair, with an emphasis on transportation routes, lodging, and theaters. Other notable buildings like the courthouse, Art Institute, library, and the University of Chicago are also labeled. The city's park and boulevard system, colloquially known as its Emerald Necklace, is depicted in bright green. The verso shows a detailed plan of the grounds of the White City and adjacent Midway Plaisance. Exhibits and attractions are outlined and accompanied by a comprehensive index. Both sides of the map note the location of Hotel Epworth, which, according to a contemporary guide to the fair, was the headquarters for the General Board of Control and 'Methodists generally.' The map is overprinted in red, indicating it was distributed by the Chorus Committee of the Cincinnati Music Festival Association. This was a clever marketing technique by the publishing juggernaut of Rand McNally, who licensed the same maps for use by a wide variety of organizations during the fair. See here for an example by the Union News Company. Source." Sheet Width (in) 13.5 Sheet Height (in) 19.9 Condition Description Issued folded into 16 panels, with moderate creasing and wear along fold lines. Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Columbian Exposition held at Chicago's Jackson Park in 1893 is one of the most iconic events in the (relatively short) history of the great city. Less than 25 years after a devastating fire destroyed much of its downtown, Chicago rapidly rebuilt to surpass New York, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. as the host of a World's Fair to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival to the New World. Though it opened a year later than originally hoped, the fair was a tremendous success and saw over 27 million attendees during its six-month run. This map of the White City and adjacent Midway Plaisance was published in Chicago in 1893 by Rand McNally & Company. Dozens of buildings, exhibits, and attractions are outlined and identified in the accompanying index. Highlights include the gigantic Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building, the iconic Ferris Wheel, a casino, and the Art Galleries (rebuilt as today's Museum of Science and Industry). The verso presents a 'Handy Map of Chicago and the World's Fair' emphasizing the available transportation routes from downtown to Jackson Park. Numerous locations of interest are labeled. Sheet Width (in) 20.4 Sheet Height (in) 14.1 Condition Description Streaks of old adhesive residue are visible in the upper corners and there is moderate wear along old fold lines. Scattered toning and offsetting, along with some marginal soiling. About good condition overall.

Description: NOTE: Map of Fair not present. Small quarto .(9 1/16 in. x 6 1/4 in.) Flexible leather covers with gilt lettering to front and spine. All edges gilt. Appears very lightly used, if at all. After a thorough explanation of helpful identifying marks, a preface, and a fair calendar, the guide sets off to address what an unfamiliar visitor really might WANT and NEED to know. First chapter covers "Arrival at the World's Fair City", followed by "The Way to The World's Fair and Its History". These inntroductory sections are followed by a six-day itinerary covering a wide selection of fair features, and concludes with a general index. The aim of this guide is to afford to its readers the fullest clearest, most concise, and above all, the most reliable information upon every subject within its scope. Its space is too limited to admit iof verbose descriptions or discursive ramblings (even were such desireable) and mere dull, dry cataloguing of details has been equally divided." ".With those who will require its aid, the most important questions are: 1st. How can I best reach the Exposition? 2nd What are the objects of interest there? 3rd How can I most easily and understandingly see and enjoy the sights?

Rand McNally. Handy Map of Chicago and the World's Fair Folding map of the Columbian Exposition sponsored by a New York industrial manufacturer.. , 1893.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Dozens of different states and countries participated in the 1893 World's Fair; held at Jackson Park in Chicago, Illinois. As a result, a tremendous amount of printed material was produced to serve as part guide, part souvenir, and part advertisement. This particular example was sponsored by Henry R. Worthington, a manufacturer of pump engines from New York. The double sided map presents two views, both designed and published by Rand McNally. The first shows the fairgrounds of the Columbian Exposition and individually labels 22 different locations where Worthington pumps and machinery can be seen. The accompanying explanations identify entries such as marine pumps propelling steam yachts in Lake Michigan, pressure pumps operating Otis elevators and condensers in the power house. The opposite side features a map of the city with the fairgrounds and the location of the Worthington Chicago Branch office highlighted in red. Despite the popularity of such material, the maps are largely ephemeral and this particular version is uncommon. Only six copies in OCLC scattered across several different entries. Sheet Width (in) 20.75 Sheet Height (in) 14 Condition Description Wear and creasing along fold lines, and a few spots of ink offsetting from the red paper covers (still present). There are four spots at fold intersections with small holes. Very good overall.

Rand McNally. Rand McNally & Co.'s' Map of Chicago Chicago on the eve of the Columbian Exposition.. , 1893.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: "This interesting map of Chicago was published locally by Rand McNally in 1892, the year prior to the city hosting the iconic Columbian Exposition at Jackson Park. Oddly, there is no mention anywhere of the World's Fair on the map itself - possibly because a base map from 1888 was used and updated with additional information. Such details include the organization of a robust transportation network comprised of steam railroads, elevated lines, and streetcars powered by horses and/or electric cables. Eight depots are noted around downtown, with a key identifying the corresponding companies that operate within each. Boulevards and parks are highlighted in green - the city's iconic 'Emerald Necklace' - and political wards are outlined in red, though only a portion of Chicago's 50 wards are included in the image. Other labeled locations of interest include elevated stations, public buildings, monuments, part of the Union Stock Yard, Bridewell Prison, and the Interstate Industrial Exposition Building, demolished the same year as publication to make way for the Art Institute. The verso presents a map of the entire city that highlights the expansion of the Sanitary District, annexations from 1890, and the proposed Chicago Union Transfer Railway Yards. Source: Encylopedia of Chicago;" Sheet Width (in) 21.8 Sheet Height (in) 27.6 Condition Description Double-sided map with creasing and wear along originally issued fold lines. Soiling and wear visible in the margins, including a few small tears. Wrinkled upper right corner. Toning and manuscript annotations in pencil on the verso do not affect the image. Good to very good overall

Milwaukee Litho. & Engraving Co.. Standard Guide Map of the World's Columbian Exposition Rare souvenir from the Columbian Exposition.. , 1893.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: "This uncommon promotional item was distributed at the 1893 Columbian Exposition by the short-lived New Orleans Brewing Association. In 1890, a collection of six breweries merged at the site of Louisiana Brewing Co. on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street to combat the practice of English brewery syndicates buying up their small-scale operations. The initial organization only existed until 1899, but it would be reborn in the 20th century as the New Orleans Brewing Company. A portion of Rand McNally's Official Guide Map has been custom-issued by the Milwaukee Lithograph and Engraving Company. The Midway Plaisance is almost entirely omitted, with emphasis on the White City - particularly the New Orleans Brewing Association Exhibit on the 2nd floor of the Agriculture Building (starred). The map is glued to stiff paper wraps that show chromolithographed images of the Perfection, Pilsner, and Louisiana Export Beers for sale by the brewery. The covers show a view of the exhibit and an aerial perspective of the brewing association factory complex, with an alleged annual capacity of 1,500,000 barrels! Source: New Orleans Brewery Tour;" Sheet Width (in) 6.25 Sheet Height (in) 9.9 Condition Description Single-sided map adhered to original stiff illustrated gold covers. Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway. The MK and T Missouri, Kansas, & Texas Railway Interesting map of 'The Katy' issued in conjunction with the Columbian Exposition in Chicago.. , 1893.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: "The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was organized in 1870 and awarded a federal land grant by the U.S. Government to connect the frontier Army outposts at Fort Riley, Fort Gibson, Fort Scott, and, eventually, Fort Worth. With the exception of the Financial Panic of 1873, the company grew steadily across Texas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, until its height around 1912. This map shows the company routes in operation in 1893, with connections stretching from Chicago to Galveston. The timing is notable, as the Windy City held a World's Fair that year known as the Columbian Exposition, and visitors from all over the country would flock to the event by road and rail. Branches extend to Kansas City, Junction City, St. Louis, Henrietta, Jefferson, and San Marcos, and the lines of the MKT (nicknamed 'The Katy') bisect a diminutive Indian Territory. Of note here is the town of Adair, the site of a famous train robbery by the Dalton Gang the year prior to publication. The left side of the page contains a list of cities, towns, and stations located along Katy lines in Texas, along with their respective counties. The verso provides descriptive text regarding promising cities along the MKT routes, as well as promotional information on the prosperity available to potential settlers in Kansas - 'The Canaan of the Home Seeker'. The front panel of the folding brochure includes a view of the Kansas State Building at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. An interesting and ephemeral map covering a period of tremendous migration to Texas. The state's population would approximately double from 1.5 to 3 million inhabitants between 1880 and 1900. Printed in Chicago by Rand McNally in 1893. Sources: Texas Migration History (University of Washington); American Rails" Sheet Width (in) 26.9 Sheet Height (in) 24.3 Condition Description Moderate wear and light discoloration along originally issued fold lines, including small spots of separation at fold intersections and along the outer edges of the sheet. Faintly creased where fold, but remains in very good condition overall.

Burke, John M.. BUFFALO BILL From Prairie to Palace An Authentic History of the Wild West With Sketches, Stories of Adventure, and Anecdotes of "Buffalo Bill", the Hero of the Plains. Rand, McNally, Chicago, 1893.

Price: US$503.25 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 1st printing. Professionally rebound in red-orange cloth with black imprinted spine with decoration. 275pp. I compared this copy, which I received disbound, with a copy in original binding which I have sold. This copy is missing the Buffalo Bill front., but has the second one as well as Burke's portrait. My comparison showed this copy has an additional ad (one ad is for Siringo's A Texas Cow-Boy). Text block in vg to near fine condition; title page which is thick enough to be a front cover, is in vg condition. My research on the previous copy has me saying the following: "This book's rarity is noted in the 2005 (non-facsimile) paperback reprint, where the writer of the Intro, Dr. Jason Berger, says that only one of four modern Cody biographers even cited this book, & then just barely. Very few copies of this book have been offered for sale in the last eighty odd years, & few libraries have a copy. The owner of this copy may be assured of many, many years of reading and reference. Burke served as what some called the "general manager" for William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West Show. Howes B982.

Burke, John M.. Buffalo Bill From Prairie to Palace (Signed First Edition). Rand McNally & Co., 1893.

Price: US$995.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Inscribed First Edition, First Printing of this image-making biography of Buffalo Bill Cody. John M. Burke was a central figure in Buffalo Bill's orbit as press agent, promoter and scribe for Buffalo Bill and the Wild West show beginning in 1883. This biography is -- in addition to being an engaging (if florid) yarn -- a pioneering work in public relations. It is an image-bulding effort, portraying Buffalo Bill as an iconic figure of the frontier and published in conjunction with Buffalo Bill making camp in the wilds of Chicago during the Columbian Exposition of 1893. This copy is inscribed on the half title page by John M. Burke to another colorful entertainer of the era -- the diminutive comic actor Marshall P. Wilder. The inscription reads "To a friend on two continents, Marshall P. Wilder comps. John M. Burke." Brown cloth with gilt titles, 275 pages. The covers have rubbing at the edges and on back cover. Gilt intact except for first two letters in "from" in the title on spine. Covers are loose at front and back with a back endpaper very loose. A previous price is penciled on two pages at front. We've resisted erasing the pencil markings to avoid stressing the delicate front hinge.
