Description: 128 pages; color maps and diagrams. 13 of the maps are tipped-in, fold-out pages. The binder stitched in four sets of spacers so that the cover would accomodate the extra text block width made by the fold-out maps. The spine strip is red cloth, which is mottled with faded spots and is frayed on the ends. An owner's name and date of "Mch 1st 85," are on the front free endpaper. The boards are mostly bare of paper on the edges, and one edge has a shallow chip. The endpapers' folds are split and chipped. The hinges are cords which are reinforced with additional thread. The pages have sparse soiling; two corners are chipped, up to 1/2 in. International shipping will require extra cost. Scans e-mailed upon request.

Description: This fantastic map of the United States was published in Chicago by Rand McNally in 1884 to promote the lines of the Missouri Pacific and Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railroad systems. The former was under the control of New York financier Jay Gould at the time the map was issued and he oversaw a period of rapid expansion across the Southwest in subsequent years. Skewed state outlines, such as an enlarged Texas, exaggerate the importance of the company rail lines and allow the audience to read the densely packed station names along each route. Text and tables of statistics in the lower right advertise nearly 10,000 miles of rail in operation that carried a large proportion of the nation's commodities like wheat, corn, and cotton. Timetables, text, illustrations, and a map of the principal railroad depots in Chicago can be seen on the verso. Description: Folding train schedule, (4 1/2x 9), 20 panels, large folding map in color. Some browning and aging, some separation at the middle fold, two of those separations are a few inches, three other smaller tears at the middle fold, these are repairable, a few chips and tears at edge folds. Nice piece of railroad memorabilia, with substantial information about rates and schedules. Most of the trains are geared toward the west, which gives an idea on the process of opening up this still relatively new part of the country.The map has its flaws, but it is sound enough to get a feel for the lines of the Union Pacific.

Description: Timetable map in fair to good condition, with extensive light chipping at edges, weakness and chipping along some folds, with small loss. Most chips mended. Large chip missing at bottom left corner of verso with loss of a small part of the straight line border. Dated March, 1884. The verso consists entirely of a map of the United States, fully colored by state, highlighting the B&O lines and immediate connections. The map is unusual as the Southeast and Far West are shown with inset maps which aren't discreet, but blend into the main map, making determinations of scale very difficult. The recto, with a cover title "Picturesque B&O West and East" has timetable information on 8 of the 16 panels, which the other panels contain the wrappers and text promoting the B&O illustrated with fanciful scenes of exotic forms of transportation, including elephants, ostriches, camel, reindeer, gondolas and frogs. These include safes, rubber and mechanical stamps, ironwork for cages, makers of ledger books, etc. A veritable treasure trove of information on the banking system of the Gilded Age. OCLC 7214548 lists 26 locations, but this listing covers the run of this periodical which was issued twice a year from 1882 to 1899. Many of the holdings shown are for only certain years, not this particular issue.
