Description: The complete, first edition, three volume, set of 'Ralph the Heir' by the renowned English novelist, Anthony Trollope. The first edition. In a half morocco binding. The complete three volume set of Anthony Trollope's popular novel, 'Ralph the Heir' which tells the story of Ralph Newton, the nephew of the Squire of Newton Priory, as he navigates debt, marriage and the heirship of his uncle's estate. The novel has been deemed noteworthy in recent years for its account of a corrupt Parliament election, an event based on Trollope's own experience in politics. In a half morocco binding. Externally, fair with marks to the boards, rubbing to the extremities and heavy shelf wear. Offsetting to the paste-downs. Hinges are strained. The spine is cracked on volume one and the rear board is loose. Both the rear board and spine are loose on volume three. Internally, generally firmly bound. Light spotting throughout and some age-toning to the edges. The occasional closed tear and mark to the pages, but otherwise bright. Fair

Fraser, original green cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on front and rear panels. First one-volume edition. RALPH THE HEIR first appeared in book form in nineteen sixpenny parts published monthly by Strahan & Co. from January 1870 through July 1871. The three-volume Hurst & Blackett edition was published 6 April 1871. Strahan's one-volume edition included eleven of the eighteen illustrations by Fraser published in their earlier parts edition (all of them were included in Strahan's second one-volume edition). Sutherland, The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction, 519. Sadleir 37 (p. 124). NCBEL III 883. Wolff did not have a copy of this edition. Professionally re-cased (spine, front and rear panels preserved) with new headbands and endpapers. Some foxing to frontispiece and first three and last four leaves, otherwise, the text is clean. Original reddish-brown cloth, titles to spines gilt and to front board in black, ruling and floral patterns to boards continued in black to spines, green coated endpapers. Early ownership signatures to front free endpapers. Spines and joints repaired, cloth somewhat soiled, splits to hinges, light rubbing and nicks at extremities, a little shaken. A good copy.
