J. D. Salinger. RAISE HIGH THE ROOF BEAM, CARPENTERS and SEYMOUR AN INTRODUCTION [First UK edition]. William Heinemann Ltd., London, 1963.

Price: US$44.83 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First UK edition. Originally published in the US as two separate stories in the New Yorker in 1955 and 1959, and in book form by Little Brown & Co., Boston in 1963 - the stories are both very much concerned with the main character Seymour Glass. ***Very good in navy-blue cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Boards clean and unmarked. Spine tight with just a very light vertical reading crease. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Three corners sharp, with slight creasing to the top corner of the back board. Quite heavy foxing to the top and fore edges of the page block [which is common with this title due to the type of paper used]. Internally also very good, with clean pages. There is some sporadic foxing to the first and last few pages. No creasing or tears. There is a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper [see scans]. ***In a very good typographical dustwrapper that is not price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just light rubbing and wear to the edges and corners. There are some patches of foxing to the dustwrapper [which is common with this title]. The light-beige colour on the spine is only slightly faded. No chips. No tears. The large foldover flaps are also uncreased [please see scans]. ***210 mm x 145 mm. 248 pages. ***The stories are: 'Raise High the Roof Beams, Carpenters' and 'Seymour - An Introduction'. ***'"Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters" and "Seymour: An Introduction" is a single volume featuring two novellas by J. D. Salinger, which were previously published in The New Yorker: "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters" (1955) and "Seymour: An Introduction" (1959). Little, Brown republished them in this anthology in 1963. It was the first time the novellas had appeared in book form. The book was the third best-selling novel in the United States in 1963, according to Publishers Weekly. The title of the first story is the first line of a message left for Seymour by his sister Boo Boo on the bathroom mirror of the family's apartment, which Buddy discovers towards the end of the story. The message itself begins with a line taken from Sappho's fragment LP 111: "Raise high the roof beam, carpenters. Like Ares comes the bridegroom, taller far than a tall man'. The second story represents an attempt by Buddy Glass to introduce the reader to his brother Seymour, who had committed suicide in 1948. The story is told in a stream of consciousness narrative as Buddy reminisces in his secluded home. This story, like others concerning the Glass family, touches upon Zen Buddhism, haiku, and the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta. [Wiki] ***A first UK edition, in nice collectable condition. Copies of the UK edition are quite hard to find in decent collectable condition now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$195.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Fine condition original gray cloth boards with gold spine lettering contained in a good condition non price-clipped dust jacket with the correct 4.00 at the upper right corner of the inner front jacket flap. Includes List of Other Books by J.D. Salinger with Author Dedication Page bound-into-the-volume directly after the full title page, indicating third or fourth issue, and the uncorrected misspelling of the name "Seymore" at page 173, lines 12-13. "FIRST EDITION" stated on the copyright page along with copyright dates of 1955 and 1959, although the book was published in 1963. Chipping at the upper jacket spine edge with a 1/2 by 1/2 inch chip extending to the upper left front jacket edge, with some scattered jacket edge nicks (see photographs). All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the spine/binding is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs). "The author writes: The two long pieces in this book originally came out in The New Yorker - Raise Hight the Roof Beam, Carpenters in 1955, Seymour - An Introduction in 1959. Whatever their differences in mood or effect, they are both very much concerned with Seymour Glass, who is the main character in my still-uncompleted series about the Glass family. It struck me that they had better be collected together, if not deliberately paired off, in something of a hurry, if I mean them to avoid unduly or undesirably close contact with new material in the series. There is only my word for it, granted, but I have several new Glass stories coming along - waxing, dilating - each in its own way, but I suspect the less said about them, in mixed company, the better. Oddly, the joys and satisfactions of working on the Glass family peculiarly increase and deepen for me with the years. I can't say why, though. Not, at least, outside the casino proper of my fiction." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

From the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest with his bookplate to the pastedown. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, name to the front free endpaper. Salinger is a finished literary craftsman" (Orville Prescott, The New York Times).

Salinger, J.D.. Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters; and Seymour: An Introduction. Little, Brown and Co., Boston, 1963.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Description: 248 pgs., 8vo. Dark gray cloth, gold spine stamping, no markings whatsoever in the book. Jacket is unworn, the book was found with a glassine wrapper that kept its condition immaculate. It bears original $4.00 price, copyright dates 1955 and 1959 (secured for early magazine appearances) and also adjacent on the left thereto a letter sequence in small type, reading RHTRBC, cypher for the book title words, and perhaps a means the publisher used to hold space while awaiting Salinger's likely late submission of his jacket blurb and the dedication, which gave us the 3 variants in first edition states that are known. This copy has the dedication page, tipped in AFTER the copyright page, and it also has the 'Sey-more' typo on page 173, making it a "third state" copy, for collector purposes. The only condition matter to note is a minute inking flaw near the top of the spine, where the gold does not cover. This tiny spot does show, but is clearly only a manufacturing flaw, not a wear point. So we grade the book Fine / Fine, and we have not seen a better copy described for sale. Photos available upon request, price is net to all. Fine condition in fine dust jacket.

Description: First edition, first issue, lacking the dedication page as issued. Small owner's name on the front pastedown, hidden under the front flap else else fine in fine dustwrapper. A lovely copy of an exceptionally scarce issue - some knowledgeable sources have speculated that as few as 20 to 30 copies of this issue were released before they were reissued with a tipped-in dedication page, although we suspect the number is substantially higher. Still, an uncommon issue.

Price: US$3202.16 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, first issue, without a dedication page. It has long been speculated that about 20 to 30 such copies were issued. Though our experience suggests the true number is much greater, copies in the first issue are still scarcer than the second and third issues, with the dedicatory leaf tipped or bound in, respectively. These two novellas, published here together and in book-form for the first time, are part of the Glass family sequence. They originally appeared in the New Yorker in 1955 and 1959. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Housed in custom yellow cloth folding case with black spine label. A fine copy in near-fine dust jacket, light creasing to spine ends, tiny closed tear at head of rear panel, else a sharp, bright example.

SALINGER J.D.. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour an Introduction (uncorrected advanceproofs). , 1963.

Price: US$5800.00 + shipping

Description: SALINGER, J.D. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour an Introduction (uncorrected advance proofs). Boston and Toronto: Little, Brown, (1963). Very tall octavo (5-1/4 by 11 inches), comb-bound as issued, original green paper wrappers. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. $5800.Uncorrected advance proof of this beloved Salinger work, with publisher's advance slip tipped onto front wrapper.Like Franny and Zooey (1961), these two long stories were first printed in The New Yorker, and form part of Salinger's uncompleted series about the Glass family. "Rarely if ever in literary history has a handful of stories aroused so much discussion, controversy, praise, denunciation, mystification and interpretation" (New York Times). This rare uncorrected advance proof—clearly derived from the printer's galleys and likely produced in very small numbers—is particularly desirable given the textual changes upon publication. Like the rare first printing, this proof is without the dedication leaf, but retain textual errors. See Starosciak A42; Bruccoli & Clark I:315. Pages neatly hand-numbered in black marker.Interior generally fine, light wear and toning to extremities of wrappers, chipping and missing prongs from plastic comb binder. An extremely good copy of a very scarce Salinger proof.

Price: US$12750.00 + shipping

Description: 1st Edition. Hardcover. Unique. 8vo., pp248. The Publisher's File Copy and Only Known Copy Extant As Such. The First Edition - bound by Little Brown, the publisher, as a production sample prior to the actual production run. This copy with the dedication page present which is a curious fact in the light of the various states of the first edition assumed. This is Little Brown's file copy. Glued to the rear free-endpaper is a printed notice stating: SAMPLE Return to Manufacturing Department LITTLE BROWN AND COMPANY Published: 1/28,63 Cloth: GSB Silver Black,Word Count; 54,225. Four typographical errors in the text have been identified by an editor/proof reader in green pencil. These are indicated on the verso of the front fly leaf - marked: "Corrections / P.117 /p.159 /p.173 /p.185". Curiously only one error, "Seymour" for "Seymore" on p.173 was found and corrected. Obviously a significant and special item, which provides unique bibliographical information. A very good example, with some fading to spine, light edgewear to cloth-covered boards, and soiling to the top edge and with glue remains on the rear pastedown to which was pasted a copy of the book's original dust wrapper since lost in time and space. A fascinating copy in a very good supplied dust wrapper. Custom Clamshell Case.
