Price: US$47.67 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A smart first edition of this humorous novel from Evelyn Waugh. First edition. A humorous novel following the activities of mostly upper-class British characters in war-time. Beginning with Barbara Sothill's experiences when her husband rejoins his reserve regiment, her servants are sent off to work in factories, and she has to find accommodation for evacuees. Written by Evelyn Waugh, an English novelist, biographer, travel writer, journalist, and book reviewer known for his early satires Decline and Fall, and A Handful of Dust. From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia. In the original beige cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Light pencil marks to the rear endpaper. Very Good
