Condition: Good

Description: This is a collection of short stories, "Punch, Brothers, Punch!" and Other Sketches by MARK TWAIN. 1878 1st edition, 2nd state; Slote, Woodman & Co.; New York. With vignettes at the beginning and end of each story. There are 9 short stories in all. The book is smaller in size - it measures 6" tall x 4 1/2" wide. With an advertisement for "Mark Twain's Patent Scrap-Book" at the back. "Punch, Brothers, Punch!" is about Twain's encounter with an "earworm" (a "virus-like" jingle), and how it occupies his mind for several days until he manages to "infect" another person, thus removing the jingle from his mind. Condition: Clean covers and spine with no stains; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. A thin, light stain appears around page 95 at the upper and outer edges and gradually gets bigger through to the end of the book; there is also a stain at the upper-outer corner of the title page and contents page. Name/address written in pencil on front end paper; last name written in pen at the top of the title page.

Twain, Mark. PUNCH, BROTHERS, PUNCH! and Other Sketches. , 1878.

Price: US$175.00 + shipping

Description: New York: Slote, Woodman & Co., n.d. [1878]. 4 pp undated ads. Original red-orange wrappers decorated in black and gold. First Edition, second printing, second binding, of this collection of nine short tales. The title one is an amusing tale about the author hearing a musical jingle and having it "infect" his mind like a virus -- wiping out his memory and incapacitating his ability to write, until he inadvertently passes the "virus" off to someone else. Another tale, "The Loves of Alonso Fitts Clarence and Rosannah Ethelton," is said to be the first story written that includes a telephone as part of the plot (24 months after Bell's patent). The second printing is identified by (a) Twain's name on the title page in facsimile autograph rather than in roman type; (b) two leaves of ads, rather than one; (c) correction of the error "health offi. could" on p. 91, and (d) sixteen lines of text (postscript added) on p. 101. The book was issued simultaneously in cloth and in wrappers -- each of which has an earlier and a later state; this is in the later wrapper binding, with "Mark Twain's Punch" on the spine and with the larger rear cover illustration. This is a very good-plus copy, with minor wear at the spine ends (barely affecting one letter), plus a large bookplate on the inside front cover. Today, copies in wrappers are somewhat scarcer than copies in cloth. Blanck 3378.

He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column “On Language” in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safire’s “magnum opus,” Safire’s Political Dictionary. "High and fine literature is wine," Twain once wrote, "and mine is only water; but everybody likes water." Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Samuel Clemens, of Mark Twain, was lauded in his obituary as the "greatest humorist this country has produced."
