Bukowski, Charles.. Pulp. A Novel.. Black Sparrow Press, 1994.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine tight copy in illustrated hardcover binding. Pulp was Bukowski's last published novel released just prior to his death. Pulp is a convoluted detective story about a hard-boiled private eye who solves his cases by waiting them out, Pulp evokes Raymond Chandler, an author who lived in Los Angeles and set stories there, as did Bukowski. The novel also bears similarity to some works by Dashiell Hammett. Pulp is a farewell to Buk's readers, as a gesture of rapprochement with death, and serves as Bukowski's sendup and send-off of himself.

Book shows modest shelf wear along edges of boards; bumping to upper right corners. SIGNED by the author. In Pulp, Bukowski demonstrates his particular brand of humor with a tongue-in-cheek detective yarn set in a seamy Los Angeles landscape; readers will appreciate the author s signature wit and world weariness. The dedication says "To bad writing" which, like the title, is a nod to pulp fiction, and an excellent addition to the genre.

Price: US$900.00 + shipping

Description: One of 750 signed/numbered hardcover copies, octavo size, 208 pp., signed by Bukowski. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was "a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. A cult hero, Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his work, using direct language and violent and sexual imagery" (n.b., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation). As much as he achieved popular acclaim during his lifetime, his reputation and following have only increased after his death. This volume, "Pulp" would be the Bukowski's final novel, completed shortly before his death. It "comments on the obsessions of the pulp fiction genre, making fun of itself as stereotypical of the genre in the grimiest form.Bukowski wrote some of his most violent, cynical, sarcastic, and shocking work during the final months of his life. Many critics have agreed this novel exemplifies Bukowski showing an acceptance of his own pending mortality" (n.b., quote from Wiki). ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in black cloth over decorated paper boards, red paper spine label with black lettering, red endpapers, title page in red and black, signed on a tipped-in sheet following the copyright page by Bukowski in black felt-tip, this number 344 of 750 signed/numbered copies (there were also 326 deluxe copies with artwork by Bukowski and an unnumbered hardcover trade edition); octavo size (9.25" by 6.26"), pagination: [1-8 plus the tipped-in sheet with Bukowski's signature] 9-202 [1, colophon] [1, blank] [1, black and white photograph of Bukowski] [1, author bio]. Price: US$1390.50 + shipping

Description: Octavo. 202pp. signed Bukowski after the bound in original Bukowski print depicting a shooting. Limited to 300 copies, the present copy is #231. A fascinating novel of a detective on his last legs, booksellers and publishers and characters in the twisted world of Southern California's darker side. The detective (possibly based on Bukowski's very Bohemian life), is in the process of being evicted from his office, sitting at his desk, his fly undone and drinking whatever cheap wine is in front of him. His client is Lady Death who wants him to locate Celine (not believing he had died some thrity years earlier). As one reviewer said: "hard-boiled farm, snappy dialogue a little off center and oddly very honest. A fine bright copy bound in 1/4 red cloth over pictorial paper covered boards depicting a black hand gun with lettering and decorations in red, black white , pale blue andf yellow, red paper spine label lettered in black, in the original acetate dust jacket. [cf. Krumhansl, 139, d].

Description: Octavo. Limited to only 16 presentation copies, published a month after Bukowski's passing. In addition, there is a remarkable presentation before the title page dated 5/9/94 from John Martin, the publisher of Black Sparrow Press, who began the press to publish Bukowski (Barbara Martin designed the books). It is inscribed to Lee [Hendrix] Rolland, wife of Peter Pott (Real name Richard Roland, owners of Either/Or Bookshop in Hermosa Beach where Bukowski and Pynchon were frequent friends who hung around to enjoy the ambiance. The inscription from John Martin reads: "For Lee--a beautiful Black Sparrow supporter for many years with thanks, John Martin, 5/9/1994". The story: A detective, Nick Belane has a client known as Lady Death who wants him to find Celine who had died decades earlier. On the other hand, she was paying his fee of $6.00 an hour and believes Celine is collecting Faulkner first editions. There is also a character known as John Barton of the Red Sparrow [joking, of course, about John Martin and the Black Sparrow Press].
