Miles, Henry Downes. Pugilistica Being One Hundred and Forty-Four Years of the History of British Boxing.. Weldon & Co., [1880]., London:, 1880.

Price: US$1000.00 + shipping

Description: 3 Vols., 8vo, decorative brown cloth, gilt stamped spine and cover, top edges gilt, illustrated, 507, 538 [6], 528, [6] pp. Hinges are a bit weak or cracked in all three volumes, but still reasonably firm, some extremity and spine wear and scuffing, some aging and browning, scattered foxing, signature on all three half titles, corner chips to some endpapers, paper just a bit brittle, tissue guard facing frontispiece of volume one is loose; otherwise about very good, and an attractive set. A wonderful set on British boxing history, when British boxing was boxing. The gilt illustration of fighters on the covers represents Daniel Mendoza and Richard Humphreys who fought three legendary fights at the close of the 18th century. Humphreys’ arm is actually still featured at pub in England. The author was a well-respected fight reporter that knew the sport well. His history starts in the early 18th century with fighters like James Fig to Tom Sayers more than 100 years later. While other boxing titles like The Fancy and Boxiana cover some of the same ground, this work is considered by many as the most comprehensive on the subject. Hartley 1365.
