Three beautifully bound and illustrated volumes on the history of British boxing. The second edition of this work, with the very scarce first edition published in 1880.With an engraved frontispiece protected by the original tissue guard to each volume, and numerous further engraved plates, the majority of which display portraits of notable British pugilists.A history of boxing in England from 1719 to 1863, with information on the lives of celebrated pugilists, reports on their fights from contemporary newspapers, and personal anecdotes.These works belonged to the library of Philip Brocklehurst, each bearing his bookplate to the front pastedown. Brocklehurst is best known for being a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 19071909, led by Ernest Shackleton. A boxer himself, he represented Cambridge University at boxing in 1905, 1906 and 1907 as a lightweight against Oxford University, and obtained a half blue. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with gilt detailing. Bumping to spine heads and tails, with some patches of light fading to the front board of vol I. Contemporary owner's bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Some spotting to text block fore edge. Internally, firmly bound.
