Description: By Boz. With Other Tales and Sketches [by other authors], from Bentley's Miscellany and The Library of Fiction. Philadelphia: Carey, Lea and Blanchard, 1837. Original drab boards with rose cloth spine and printed label. First Edition of this early collection of tales by various authors -- which constitutes one of Dickens's earliest American appearances in book form. According to Podeschi, 2,000 copies were printed in April 1837. This Dickens tale was not collected in an all-Dickens volume until ten years after his death -- in THE MUDFOG PAPERS (1880). Also included in this volume is "An Evening of Visits" by "J. Fennimore Cooper Esq. [sic]". This volume is in very good-plus condition (closed tear in front free endpaper, rose cloth faded as always, slight rubbing of the spine label); one cannot encounter these Philadelphia volumes from the 1830s in much better condition. Description: This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States. Condition: Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. The pages are in good condition with only some occasional light foxing (heaviest on the title page - see photo) and staining. There are a few characters written in pencil on the front pastedown and a name written in pen on a front end paper. Some fading of the spine label with a tear at the top edge and along the center. The front end paper has 1" tears at the inner and bottom edges.
